The Story
Why it exists.
The beginning
Portelier Parfum's Mediterranean Connections collection draws its inspiration from the places where land meets sea, where coastal winds carry the scent of herbs and salt spray across rocky shores. Urla, the collection's latest addition, captures the character of wind-touched landscapes where Mediterranean flora thrives in briny air. Perfumer Can Bozdemir approached this brief by focusing on the sensory reality of these environments: the ripe fruit that grows close to the coast, the aromatic herbs that grow between stones, and the mineral richness of sun-warmed driftwood left by the tide.
Bozdemir selected blackcurrant and fig for their ability to evoke Mediterranean fruit without resorting to the citrus or orange blossom signatures commonly associated with the region. The basil-violet leaf combination was chosen to capture the scent of coastal herb gardens where green plants grow alongside the sea. In the base, the pairing of ambergris and driftwood creates a marine-woody signature that feels both natural and distinctive. The overall structure moves from fruity brightness through aromatic freshness toward a warm, salt-tinged woodiness that represents the final hour of sunlight on a coastal afternoon.
The evolution
The fragrance opens with blackcurrant, its bright, tart character immediately evoking the sensation of biting into ripe berries. Cardamom adds complexity with its warm, slightly eucalyptine spice, while fig bridges the transition between fruit and green notes. As the composition evolves, basil takes center stage, its aromatic, slightly sweet herbaceousness dominating the heart. Violet leaf adds an earthy, dewy floral dimension, while aquatic notes introduce a cooling marine quality that feels like a sea breeze cutting through the green intensity. The drydown settles into a warm, salty embrace: sandalwood provides creamy woodiness, ambergris contributes its distinctive oceanic-animalic signature, and driftwood leaves a dry, mineral impression on the skin.
Cultural impact
Since its 2025 debut, Urla has been embraced by scent enthusiasts who appreciate its understated coastal narrative. It often appears in discussions of Portelier’s Mediterranean Connections line, noted for translating sea-kissed landscapes into perfume. Wearers cite its ability to evoke a quiet shoreline walk, positioning it as a subtle alternative to louder marine fragrances.
