The Story
Why it exists.
The beginning
To Be Green arrived in 2021 as part of Police's To Be collection, a line built around identity, self-expression, and the idea that scent can say something about who you're becoming. The brief was simple: a young, fresh fragrance with a unisex reach that reflects a renewed awareness of self and world. Perfumer Véronique Nyberg built it around a tension between bright citrus and powdery florals, then grounded the whole thing in warm vanilla and cedar. The name says it all: this is about being green in the best sense, alive, immediate, still becoming.
What makes To Be Green interesting is the hand-off between its three acts. The opening is all sharp citrus, lemon and mandarin throwing light, but cardamom slips in early, adding a warm spice that keeps the top from feeling like window cleaner. Then the florals arrive: violet, jasmine, peony. Powdery. Soft. Almost nostalgic. It's a contrast that catches you off guard if you weren't expecting it. The base, bourbon vanilla, cedar, sandalwood, smooths everything into warmth. Vanilla cream, cedar warmth, sandalwood depth. This is where the fragrance lives for most of its wear.
The evolution
To Be Green opens clean. Lemon and mandarin orange hit sharp and bright, unapologetic in their freshness. Cardamom arrives within minutes, warm, slightly spicy, the kind of note that makes you lean in. The citrus doesn't disappear. It softens. The florals take their time arriving, but when they do, the composition shifts. Violet and peony settle in, powdery and quiet, a contrast to the bright opening that feels almost deliberate. Jasmine threads through, adding a floral warmth that keeps the heart from going flat. The drydown is where this fragrance earns its name. Vanilla cream wraps around cedar and sandalwood, warm, woody, grounded. The sillage stays moderate throughout. Close enough to catch in a room, never loud enough to announce itself. On most skin, expect four to six hours of wear before the base notes fade to a quiet skin presence.
Cultural impact
To Be Green lands in a crowded space, fresh, green, unisex fragrances are everywhere in 2021. What sets it apart is the powdery floral heart. The violet-peony middle is the fragrance's signature, the thing that makes it memorable even if it costs less than competitors. Police built its identity on urban confidence and accessible attitude; To Be Green translates that into a scent that works for everyday without trying too hard. The vegan designation and moderate sillage suggest a fragrance designed for real life, office wear, casual outings, someone who wants to smell good without making an entrance.
