The Story
Why it exists.
The beginning
The Potion line by Police is built on contrast, clean and dangerous, sweet and sharp. Potion Arsenic follows that template, taking its name from a substance that's beautiful in small doses and lethal in excess. Perfumer Pierre-Constantin Guéros worked with that same tension, building a fragrance that opens soft and ends up somewhere unexpected.
The combination of coconut and almond in the top is what makes this distinctive. Neither note typically plays well with others, coconut can go sunscreen, almond can go bitter, but here they're held in check by cinnamon's spice and myrrh's resinous depth. The tobacco leaf doesn't arrive immediately; it waits until the florals have done their work, then adds a dry, herbal counterpoint that keeps the sweetness from becoming cloying.
The evolution
Almond arrives first, sharp and slightly bitter, quickly joined by coconut's creamy warmth. The cinnamon doesn't wait long, it cuts through almost immediately, giving the opening a spicy edge that prevents the sweetness from taking over. Within twenty minutes, the coconut deepens, becoming lactonic, almost edible, while the purple orchid and ylang-ylang begin to bloom. The tobacco leaf arrives quietly, adding a herbaceous counterpoint to the florals. By the second hour, the drydown settles: myrrh and patchouli form a warm, resinous base, with tonka bean adding a soft, vanillic sweetness. The tobacco lingers in the background, and the coconut remains, a ghost of warmth that refuses to fully disappear. On skin, it projects moderately for the first few hours, then settles into an intimate trail that lasts 6-8 hours depending on application.
Cultural impact
Potion Arsenic occupies a specific space: sweet enough to appeal to a broad audience, with enough tobacco and spice to keep it interesting for those who want more. The Potion line has been building toward this kind of complexity, and the 2023 release feels like the most fully realized expression of the brand's contrast-forward approach.
