The Story
Why it exists.
The beginning
Oud Taiga was created by David Falsberg and launched in 2014, drawing its name and character from deer musk and the taiga. The name connects two strong ideas: an untamed northern setting and the animalic musk that anchors the fragrance. Cedar, Artemisia, Davana, Guaiac Wood, and Geranium establish the forest reference, while Sandalwood, Amber, Indian Oud, and Deer Musk contribute depth and warmth. Together, the listed materials form a composition built around aromatic woods, musk, greenery, and spice.
The composition brings together two contrasting groups of materials. Artemisia, Davana, and Geranium provide a green, herbal presence, while Deer Musk and Sandalwood add warmth and depth. Cedar and Guaiac Wood give the composition a woody character without relying on resin alone. Spicy Notes add another dimension, and Indian Oud and Agarwood provide its dark center. Together, these materials make Oud Taiga a study in bark, musk, wood, and aromatic smoke, with each note adding a distinct layer to the overall structure.
The evolution
The opening centers on Artemisia, Davana, and Geranium, supported by Cedar and Guaiac Wood. As the fragrance develops, Deer Musk and Sandalwood bring warmth and softness, while Amber and Spicy Notes add further depth. Indian Oud and Agarwood deepen the middle with a darker woody and resinous quality. The listed materials remain in careful balance, allowing the composition to move between greenery, wood, musk, spice, and amber. Its character comes from this interaction rather than from a single dominant note, with the different elements gradually revealing more of the scent as it wears on the skin.
Cultural impact
Oud Taiga entered the oud landscape in 2014 with a composition shaped by deer musk, Indian Oud, Agarwood, woods, greenery, amber, and spice. Its limited availability and apparent discontinuation give the fragrance the character of a limited edition rather than a permanently available release. For those encountering it now, that scarcity adds context to a composition that already stands apart through its combination of animalic musk, layered woods, and aromatic materials.
The House
Phoenicia PerfumesPhoenicia Perfumes is a micro-niche fragrance house founded by David Falsberg, who created both the brand and its entire scent catalog as a one-man operation. The label emerged in 2013 and has maintained a deliberately small collection, with its earliest editions including REALOUD, Far NWest, Gone But Not, Rucher Fleuri, Cocoa Flora, and Skin Graft, followed by REALOUD Feral and Oud Taiga in 2014, and Narcissus Greenlight in 2024. The brand occupies a singular position in the niche fragrance world, producing scents described as art rather than commercial fragrance, targeting collectors who seek unconventional olfactory experiences beyond mainstream offerings.
The Creator
David FalsbergFalsberg's work resists easy description. He favored unexpected material pairings, bold contrasts that initially startle before slowly revealing their internal logic.
