The Story
Why it exists.
The beginning
Julie Massé designed Purple Lady as a study in contrasts. The name suggests something regal, but the composition is surprisingly grounded. Coffee at the opening gives it an unexpected edge, while orange blossom and jasmine provide the softness. Vanilla and patchouli in the base ensure the drydown stays warm and intimate. It's a fragrance that refuses to be one thing.
The note structure here rewards attention. Lemon and pear open bright and crisp. Coffee doesn't wait in the wings, it arrives early, adding warmth and a slight bitterness that keeps the sweetness honest. The heart is where the florals do their work: orange blossom brings a waxy, honeyed sweetness, while jasmine adds depth. The base is classic oriental territory, vanilla's warmth, patchouli's earth, but the florals have left their mark on it. What you're left with is warm, sweet, and unexpectedly complex.
The evolution
The opening announces itself within seconds. Lemon cuts first, bright and direct. Pear adds a soft fruitiness that lingers just beneath. Coffee arrives within a minute, grounding everything that came before. The middle phase is all about the orange blossom taking over, but coffee doesn't disappear, it deepens, becoming the backbone of the heart. Jasmine follows, amplifying the floral quality. The base is vanilla and patchouli, warm and intimate. Four to six hours of wear, with the last hour being close to the skin.
Cultural impact
Purple Lady arrived during a period when designer fragrances were becoming increasingly accessible to a broader audience, moving away from the exclusive luxury image that once defined perfumery. The fruity-fresh trend that this fragrance exemplifies reflects a cultural shift in the 2010s toward lighter, more casual scent profiles that could be worn daily rather than reserved for special occasions. Pascal Morabito, while not a house that dominates mainstream conversation, has maintained a consistent presence in European markets where the brand is recognized for offering approachable luxury without the stratospheric price tags of niche houses.
