The Story
Why it exists.
The beginning
Marco Serussi built the brand on architectural minimalism and restraint, translating fashion's clean lines into fragrance. In 2013, alongside the bright MS White, came MS Oud, a deliberate counterweight. The house wanted something that leaned into depth, into mystery, into the surreal aromatics of the Orient. Perfumer Dominique Preyssas of CPL Aromas was given that brief and delivered something that honors traditional oud composition while wearing contemporary skin. This was the dark sibling. The one that didn't play it safe.
Where MS Oud departs from convention is the leather. Most modern oud fragrances build around florals, rose, saffron, sometimes a sweet gum. This one goes darker. The leather is the heart's counterweight to oud's resinous weight. Together they create something smoky, animalic, intimate rather than performative. The opening spices keep things clean and structured, that Marco Serussi restraint showing through even here. It's the tension between traditional Oriental weight and modern restraint that makes this composition interesting rather than heavy.
The evolution
The opening announces woody warmth and spices cleanly. Cardamom, perhaps. Black pepper. Cedar and sandalwood underneath. It doesn't announce itself loudly, just enough to establish that something is happening. The transition comes around the one-hour mark. That's when the leather and oud take the stage. The oud arrives dark and resinous, like smoke from burning wood. The leather isn't polished or sweet, it's smoky, a little worn, intimate. The two materials play off each other for the next several hours. Around hour two or three, the oud deepens further. Becomes more animalic. The leather settles into the skin. Then the drydown arrives: amber and musk, with the smoke fading into something softer. The amber adds a honeyed warmth. The musk keeps everything close to the skin, powdery and skin-like. The final impression is softer than the opening suggested. Warm rather than bold. Intimate rather than present.
Cultural impact
MS Oud carved a niche in the accessible oud market. Oud-dominant fragrances remain uncommon in Western perfumery, and this one delivers quality and character at a price that doesn't require commitment. It's become the recommendation for someone who wants to explore the note family without the investment most oud fragrances demand.
