The Story
Why it exists.
The beginning
In 2019, Charles Caruso created Oud Wa Amber as part of Berdoues' Collection Grands Crus. A single spray of Thailand oud, anchored by Spanish labdanum, framed by Indian nutmeg's quiet warmth. The oud opens with a deep, smoky resonance that feels both ancient and refined. Caruso wasn't building complexity through volume. He was building it through restraint, three notes, one story, told completely.
The Thai oud and Spanish labdanum together create something notable. The oud brings its smoky, slightly medicinal depth. The labdanum, balsamic, honeyed, resinous, wraps around it without smothering. What results is an oud that doesn't announce itself so much as settle in. The Indian nutmeg keeps the opening from feeling heavy, adding an aromatic warmth that reads as spice without heat. The interplay between these three elements creates a fragrance that feels both bold and approachable, with each note taking its turn to shine while never overwhelming the others.
The evolution
The first minutes belong to nutmeg's warmth, aromatic, slightly sweet, like the air in a room where something's been burning gently. It establishes a tone: this is oud, but not oud in a hurry. Within the hour the Thai oud takes over fully. Smoky. Resinous. A slight animalic edge that gives it presence without aggression. The labdanum doesn't compete, it supports, adding a honeyed amber quality that smooths the rougher edges. By hour three, the drydown is almost meditative. Labdanum's resinous warmth holds the oud like an amber glow, fading slowly into something skin-close. The next morning, a faint trace remains, proof the oud did its work. There's a quiet confidence to how this fragrance unfolds, revealing new facets with each passing hour.
Cultural impact
Oud Wa Amber sits in a curious space. The Grands Crus collection signals ambition, rare materials, refined execution. Yet it carries the Berdoues sensibility: accessible, unpretentious, wearable. It's a fragrance that invites exploration, offering complexity without intimidation.
