The Story
Why it exists.
The beginning
In 2023, Michael Bootz set out to capture the electric atmosphere of a Kyiv after-hours bar. The result is Ginger Bar, a fragrance that screams confidence and edge. Otaki's dedication to narrative clarity and material honesty led Bootz to choose ginger as the protagonist, a spice that is both fresh and daring in perfumery. He surrounded it with rum's caramel warmth, black pepper's bite, and a supporting cast of smoky incense, sweet plum, and leathery tobacco. The goal was to create a scent that feels like a night out, bold and unforgettable, without resorting to clichés.
The choice of ginger as the headline was deliberate; it is a spice that is both familiar and surprising in perfumery. Bootz paired it with rum to add sweetness and warmth, and with black pepper to enhance the spice. The supporting heart notes were chosen to create a full sensory experience: smoke and incense for atmosphere, plum for sweetness, tobacco and leather for depth, and gaiac for woody resonance. Cardamom and black pepper amplify the spice, while labdanum and amber provide a resinous base that ties the composition together. Marigold adds a unique floral twist that prevents the scent from becoming too heavy, and castoreum adds an animalic nuance that makes the leather more realistic.
The evolution
Ginger Bar begins without any preamble; the ginger, rum, and black pepper hit the skin instantly, creating a warm, spicy opening that is both inviting and intense. Within minutes, the heart notes emerge, blending smoky incense with sweet plum and aromatic tobacco. The ginger remains present, now joined by cardamom and black pepper, while labdanum and amber add resinous depth. Leather and gaiac wood provide an earthy, grounding quality, and marigold offers a subtle floral counterpoint. Castoreum lends an animalic edge that enhances the leather. As time passes, the spice fades and the smoke and rum mellow, leaving a drydown dominated by leather, gaiac, and a lingering hint of ginger. The transition is smooth, with no sharp edges, making the entire wear a continuous, evolving experience.
Cultural impact
Ginger Bar reflects a modern reinterpretation of Eastern spice culture, drawing on the historic role of ginger and cardamom in trade routes that linked Kyiv to the Black Sea. By blending these ingredients with rum and smoky ambergris, the fragrance evokes the convivial atmosphere of a 19th‑century tavern where merchants exchanged stories over spiced drinks. This cultural nod resonates with contemporary audiences seeking authenticity, while the inclusion of local Ukrainian leather notes honors the perfumer’s heritage. The scent thus bridges past and present, offering a sensory narrative that celebrates both tradition and innovation, and it has become a subtle emblem of post‑war creative resilience in the region.
