The Story
Why it exists.
The beginning
Ilse Vandeputte designed Spicy Sandal for ONNO Collection's Les Naturelles line, a range dedicated to celebrating ingredients in their most direct, elemental forms. Vandeputte's brief was to capture a specific sensory transition: the moment one steps from the noise and heat of a market into a cool, shadowed interior. The Belgian perfumer approached this not through literal translation, but through emotional resonance, selecting materials that could evoke both the spice of the external world and the woody refuge of the internal one. The composition relies entirely on six ingredients, a constraint that forces each material to earn its place. Vandeputte has noted that working within such narrow parameters requires complete confidence in each element, since there is nowhere to hide weak materials in a blend of this simplicity.
The philosophy behind Les Naturelles demands that each ingredient serve multiple purposes simultaneously. Pink pepper must provide both spice and a certain fruity softness that prevents harshness. Sandalwood needs to contribute warmth while remaining subordinate to the overall structure, not overwhelming with its creamy character. Cedarwood functions as both fixative and contrast, its dry quality preventing the composition from becoming too soft or sweet. Patchouli adds earthiness that grounds the spicier elements, while vetiver contributes smoke and grass that extend the sensory narrative beyond simple sweetness.
The evolution
The evolution of Spicy Sandal follows a remarkably cohesive arc given its single-phase structure. Because there are no distinct opening or drydown notes, the fragrance simply intensifies and then gradually recedes, with the heart notes themselves shifting in prominence over time. The initial impression is dominated by pink pepper and nutmeg, their sharp spice commanding attention. Within thirty minutes, sandalwood begins to integrate, its creamy character taming the pepper's bite without eliminating it. Cedarwood asserts itself around the two-hour mark, bringing a dry, structural quality that suggests the wooden beams of that shadowy lounge from Vandeputte's original vision. Patchouli and vetiver emerge gradually, their earthy depth becoming more apparent as the spicier top notes begin to soften. The final hours belong largely to vetiver and sandalwood, a quiet, warm conclusion that rewards patience.
Cultural impact
Since its 2022 debut, Spicy Sandal has resonated with a community that values travel-inspired scents and unisex versatility. Its peppery opening and warm woody base have been embraced by fragrance enthusiasts who appreciate a composition that feels both adventurous and comforting. Over the past years, the scent has been referenced in social media discussions about seasonal transitions, often highlighted as a go‑to for cooler months. This steady appreciation has helped cement its place in contemporary niche perfumery, influencing newer releases that aim to blend spice with smooth wood tones while maintaining approachability for a broad audience.
