The Story
Why it exists.
The beginning
Vanilla Shot arrived in 2018 as part of the Sepia collection. Bertrand Duchaufour collaborated with photographer Martin Hill on this one. The name says it plainly. A shot, concentrated, quick, direct. But the scent itself unfolds slowly, taking its time to reveal what warmth actually smells like when it isn't trying. It opens with an aldehydic sparkle that catches light in unexpected ways, bright and immediate, before settling into something deeper and more layered. The vanilla doesn't rush in. It arrives when the initial brightness begins to soften, bringing with it resinous undertones that feel both comforting and complex. There's a tension in how the fragrance moves, sharp at first, then rounding into warmth as the hours pass.
What makes this work is the aldehydes. They're not just a top note here, they're the light source. The aldehydic quality gives the opening a sharp, luminous character that sets the tone for everything that follows. Saffron and coriander arrive with the aldehydes, contributing bright, aromatic dimensions. Dried fruits add texture as the composition moves forward. Rose and opoponax introduce depth that prevents the whole thing from reading as dessert. Then the base does what bases do, it stays. Ugandan vanilla is rich and warm.
The evolution
The opening announces itself quickly, aldehydes and saffron create a sharp effect that captures attention. Coriander accompanies the opening, keeping things aromatic. The heart arrives with dried fruits emerging, then rose, then opoponax, bridging the sharp top and the sweet base. Vanilla dominates the drydown, seeping in as the aldehydes soften, growing heavier and more pronounced. By the later hours, the fragrance has settled into something warm and balsamic. Myrrh and benzoin provide structure. Caramel adds sweetness before everything settles close to the skin. The longevity is the real story here. The sillage stays close rather than announcing itself. This is a fragrance for someone who wants to be remembered, not noticed.
Cultural impact
Vanilla Shot occupies a specific corner of the oriental category. The aldehydic opening gives it a classical quality that contrasts with the warm drydown. The fragrance strikes a balance between brightness and depth, modern and classical, challenging yet comforting. Among its peers, it stands out for its contradiction. The aldehydic spark at the beginning creates an immediate impression that gives way to something richer as time passes. This contrast defines the fragrance's character, making it feel both timeless and contemporary.
