The Story
Why it exists.
The beginning
Fantasquatic arrived as part of Mugler's Les Exceptions collection, a line built for the house's most experimental instincts. Perfumer Jean-Christophe Hérault was tasked with something difficult: taking marine fragrance conventions and reshaping them into something that feels original. The approach combined papyrus with marine notes that stay dry rather than sweet. There's a mineral quality underneath, like the surface of a rocky coast exposed to cool sea air. Coral and warm stone provide an unexpected depth, grounding the fragrance in something that feels ancient rather than fleeting. That's the foundation.
The real tension here lives between aquatic freshness and papyrus dryness. The marine element feels mineral and grounded rather than bright and fizzy. Warm spice from cardamom and coriander seed provides contrast, keeping the aquatic from going cold. The result is a fragrance that smells like the ocean but feels like something ancient. Amber and patchouli don't soften it, they deepen it. The composition holds together in an unexpected way.
The evolution
The opening hits fast: grapefruit and lemon cut clean and sharp, the kind of citrus that announces itself and doesn't apologize. Within minutes the marine notes arrive, but not in the usual way. This isn't a beachy vibe. It's mineral, almost chalky, like the smell of a rocky shore rather than a tropical bay. The cardamom and coriander seed warm everything up, keeping the aquatic from going cold. By hour three, the amber and papyrus take over. That's when it gets interesting, a dry, papery quality emerges, like old books and warm stone. The patchouli lingers close to skin for the remaining hours, intimate and grounded. The sillage remains noticeable without being overpowering, present without demanding attention.
Cultural impact
The Les Exceptions collection represents Mugler's experimental side, fragrances that approach scent design differently. Fantasquatic's approach to marine scent combines mineral and papyrus-driven elements with warmth rather than sweetness. The composition stands apart from more conventional aquatic options, offering something that feels more considered and layered. It presents an alternative vision of what marine fragrances can be.
