The Story
Why it exists.
The beginning
Jacques Huclier built A*Men Kryptomint in 2017 as a limited-edition refresh of the A*Men lineage. The assignment was simple in name only: take the beloved patchouli-chocolate-gourmand framework and give it somewhere new to go. His answer was frozen US peppermint, an ingredient that doesn't whisper freshness but shouts it. Egyptian geranium forms the heart, bridging the cold opening with the warm, deeply familiar A*Men base of Indonesian patchouli, tonka, vanilla, and chocolate. The name says it all: Kryptomint. This is A*Men under cryogenic suspension, preserved sharp and ready to deploy whenever energy is needed.
What makes the composition work is how the mint doesn't disappear, it transforms. In modern perfumery, peppermint extracted via CO2 or cold-process methods retains a sweeter, more aromatic character than the medicinal varieties of older formulations. That sweetness is crucial here: it means the mint can hold a conversation with the chocolate and tonka rather than screaming over them. The Indonesian patchouli anchoring the base is bittersweet in the way that defines the A*Men house code, earthy and dark without tipping into funk. Kryptomint is a mint fragrance that refuses to stay minty.
The evolution
The opening hits within seconds. Frozen mint, clean and sharp, the kind that makes your sinuses sit up. No preamble, no soft launch, immediate, electric, almost clinical in its precision. This phase lasts maybe thirty minutes before the mint starts to round off, becoming sweeter, less astringent. The geranium arrives quietly, bringing a rose-adjacent greenness that tempers the mint's sharpness without killing it. The two notes coexist for a while, an interesting handshake between cool and floral. Then the base begins to assert itself, patchouli first, earthy and familiar, followed by chocolate and tonka arriving in tandem. The chocolate isn't dominant but it's present, lending a subtle cocoa bitterness that makes the tonka's sweetness feel earned rather than sugary. By hour three, the mint has largely left the building. What's left is warm, sweet, and deeply A*Men: patchouli, chocolate, a whisper of vanilla. This phase holds close to the skin, moderate sillage, the kind of drydown that requires someone standing beside you to notice.
Cultural impact
A*Men Kryptomint occupies a specific niche in the Mugler men's lineup: fresh but not light, sweet but not soft. It appeals to men who want the A*Men house code, patchouli, chocolate, warmth, without committing to the full gourmand intensity of the original. The mint modulation makes it approachable for warmer weather or daytime wear while preserving the identity. Limited-edition status adds collectibility within the Mugler enthusiast community.
