The Story
Why it exists.
The beginning
Modern Oud arrived in 2020 as Moresque's answer to a specific question: what happens when you strip oud of its intimidation and keep its soul? The brand has always operated at the crossroads of Italian craftsmanship and Arabic aromatic tradition, but this composition pushed further into contemporary territory. Where previous releases leaned into heritage and historical reference, Modern Oud looked forward, toward glass towers and clean lines rather than incense-soaked chambers. The brief seems to have been simple: make oud wearable for someone who wants the note without the commitment. The result is a fragrance that respects its materials while refusing to be weighed down by them.
The combination of cashmere wood and hinoki is the real move here. Both are soft, almost cuddly woods, cashmere wood literally named for its skin-like texture, hinoki bringing a dry Japanese cypress quality that keeps things airy. These don't compete with the oud. They support it, lift it, keep it from sinking into heaviness. Add cypriol oil, earthy, slightly camphorated, the kind of material that adds depth without weight, and you have a base that's complex but never ponderous. The oud itself is described as subtle, modern, not animalic. This is oud wearing a tailored suit instead of robes.
The evolution
The opening hits clean and bright, citrus, bergamot, aquatic notes arriving together in a wave of synthetic freshness that some might call clinical and others will call brilliant. It reads like the first hour of a workday: sharp, alert, ready. Then the green notes arrive. Juniper berries add a slight gin-like quality, a herbal sharpness that cuts through the citrus. Tomato leaf brings something unexpected, vegetal, slightly acidic, the smell of green stems crushed between fingers. Cypress rounds it out with dry woodiness. The handoff isn't dramatic. The citrus fades, the green deepens, and suddenly you're in a different place than where you started. The base is where the oud finally appears, and it's nothing like you expected. Clean. Modern. Cashmere wood wraps around it like a soft blanket, hinoki adds a dry whisper of Japanese cypress, cypriol lingers as an earthy undertone. On most skin types, this holds for 8-10 hours. The sillage stays moderate throughout, you're not filling a room, you're leaving a trace.
Cultural impact
Modern Oud occupies a specific niche in the contemporary oud landscape, accessible without being boring, modern without being disposable. It's the fragrance for someone who's curious about oud but intimidated by its more extreme expressions. The community response leans positive: praised for its wearability, its longevity, and its ability to deliver the prestige of oud without the commitment. Some find it too subtle; those wanting something bold and unapologetic might look elsewhere. But for the majority who appreciate the note's complexity without wanting to wear a statement, this fills a real gap.
