The Story
Why it exists.
The beginning
Wood + Cardamom arrived in 2024 as part of Michael Malul London's Plus Collection, a line built around combinations that sound simple but smell anything but. Perfumer Hamid Merati-Kashani started with a question: what happens when you let cardamom lead instead of linger? The answer is this fragrance. Not a supporting spice, but the main act. The apple keeps it modern, the bergamot keeps it bright, and the woody base keeps it honest.
What makes this structure interesting is the hand-off. Cardamom opens with that particular cardamomic bite, green, almost medicinal, certainly alive. But apple tempers it immediately, adding a roundness that prevents sharpness from becoming sharpness. The rose in the heart doesn't arrive as rescue; it arrives as confirmation. Yes, this is warm. Yes, this is floral. The violet leaf adds that slightly metallic green edge that keeps the heart from going soft. Then sandalwood and musk carry it home, not dramatically, but with the kind of quiet persistence that outlasts the conversation.
The evolution
The opening is the most assertive moment. Cardamom and apple, bergamot lifting everything bright. It reads crisp for the first twenty minutes, almost astringent in the best way. Then the rose begins to bloom, not a flood, a gradual unfurling that coincides with the violet leaf adding its green, slightly ozonic quality. The ambroxan becomes perceptible around the hour mark, bringing a mineral warmth that bridges the floral heart to the base. Sandalwood arrives last, threading through musk and earthy notes to create a drydown that sits close to skin but projects enough to be noticed. On most skin types, this lasts eight to ten hours. The sillage is strong, not room-filling, but present. You'll know it's there. Others will too.
Cultural impact
Wood + Cardamom fits squarely into the brand's philosophy: a scent you can wear every day, built around a single clear idea. The cardamom-forward structure sets it apart from typical woody-floral compositions, giving it a spiced edge that reads modern without trying. This 2024 release taps into the global appetite for spiced gourmand fragrances.
