The Story
Why it exists.
The beginning
Volantis 685 was composed by Alexandra Monet in 2023, released as one of Maison Noir's annual limited editions. The name Volantis draws from the concept of flight, though the scent itself is earthbound and intimate. Monet built the fragrance around a tension: the sharp, metallic bite of saffron against the quiet warmth of white leather. It exists in the brand's townhouse as a room you return to when you want to feel held without being overwhelmed.
The note structure here is unusual. Iris typically serves as a bridge or a base, but Volantis 685 puts it in the heart, flanked by jasmine and white leather. That placement gives the florals a wrapping rather than a platform, they emerge through the leather rather than above it. Meanwhile, praline in the base is doing quiet work, softening the cedar and ambroxan into something that reads as sweet without being saccharine. The composition leans Oriental without relying on the usual castoreum or oud anchors.
The evolution
The opening hits immediately with saffron's metallic warmth, a brief, almost medicinal brightness that recedes within ten minutes. What replaces it is the white leather, arriving soft and intimate, carrying the iris and jasmine into the heart phase. The florals don't announce themselves; they scent the leather. By hour three, the praline begins its work, sweetening the drydown in a way that feels inevitable rather than sudden. Cedar and ambroxan anchor the final hours, staying close to the skin. On fabric, the leather note lingers into the next day.
Cultural impact
Maison Noir arrived in 2022 with a conceptual premise unlike most niche houses: each fragrance represents a door within a fictional townhouse, positioning scent as narrative architecture rather than mere luxury commodity. Volantis 685, launched in 2023, belongs to the annual limited-edition collection, making it inherently scarce. The house's founder duo, Claudio Denz and David Weber, built the brand's identity around controlled exclusivity, no mass retail presence, no celebrity endorsements, just a small audience seeking distinction. Within niche fragrance culture, where scarcity drives both price and prestige, this approach carves a specific niche among collectors who value the story as much as the juice.
