The Story
Why it exists.
The beginning
Jacob Chimoni unveiled Dramatic Pause in 2017 as part of Maison Jaxob's early wave of handcrafted scents. Inspired by the tension between a crisp forest breath and a lingering, resin-laden memory, the perfumer built the fragrance around eucalyptus and pink pepper as an immediate, bold statement, layering in an intricate heart of woody and resinous materials that reveal their complexity over time.
The note philosophy behind Dramatic Pause centers on contrasting freshness with depth. Eucalyptus brings a crisp, cool quality reminiscent of forest air, while pink pepper adds a warm, spicy brightness that prevents the opening from feeling clinical. The heart notes explore the intersection of cool and warm through oud's deep, resinous character paired with sandalwood's creamy woodiness, frankincense's aromatic intensity, and supporting earthier materials like vetiver and fig leaf. Vanilla and siam benzoin bridge the fresh opening and deep heart by adding warmth that ties the composition together, creating a fragrance that feels simultaneously cool and enveloping.
The evolution
The opening phase hits immediately with eucalyptus and pink pepper creating a bold, fresh-spicy impression that demands attention. Green notes and elemi add complexity to this initial statement. The heart phase develops over the next several hours, revealing an intricate landscape where oud, sandalwood, and frankincense provide woody-resinous depth, balanced by orris root's powdery elegance and vetiver's smoky earthiness. Fig leaf contributes green, slightly fruity nuance while vanilla and siam benzoin offer warmth and sweetness. Angelica and elemi continue threading aromatic complexity through the middle notes. The drydown settles into lingering oud and vetiver with sandalwood, vanilla, and siam benzoin slowly fading while maintaining the fragrance's complex character.
Cultural impact
Since its 2017 debut, Dramatic Pause has become a touchstone for fans of Maison Jaxob’s darker, memory‑driven line. Wearers often cite its green‑spicy opening as a bold alternative to more traditional oud‑centric releases, positioning it alongside Forbidden Sketch and Favourite Sin as a scent that rewards patience. Its balanced sillage and long‑lasting drydown have earned it a reputation as a quiet statement piece in niche circles, frequently mentioned in discussions of modern aromatic‑oriental works.
