Why it exists.
The beginning
Miguel Matos composed Wild Tonka Freaking for Mai Senza Profumo in 2022, and the name does almost all the explaining. Not "wild" as in boisterous, not "freaking" as in mild surprise. The title telegraphs intent before the bottle is even cracked. Mai Senza Profumo is a fragrance house that builds compositions around strong material statements, and Wild Tonka Freaking is one of the clearest expressions of that approach. The fragrance stacks tonka into a composition already weighted with animalic materials, then lets everything coexist without mediation. Hyraceum, the animalic mineral note derived from hyrax excrement and prized in niche perfumery for its leathery-civet depth, sits alongside oud, tobacco, and plum.
The note list reads like a roll call of materials that usually work alone. Tonka bean, vanilla, tobacco, oud. What keeps it from collapsing into generic sweetness is the architectural tension between materials that rarely share the same stage. Hyraceum brings a raw, almost fecal warmth that grounds the sweetness in something bodily. Cypriol oil, also known as nagarmotha, adds a smoky earthiness that reads closer to smoldering root than to woodsmoke. Osmanthus contributes its apricot-skin fruity quality, lending a ripe, slightly tannic edge that brightens the densest parts of the composition.
The evolution
Wild Tonka Freaking opens with a dense, almost confectionary sweetness built on tonka bean and plum, quickly darkened by black pepper and broom. Within minutes, the heart unfurls: hyraceum, cypriol oil, and balsam fir push the composition toward a raw, animalic edge that reads more worn leather than sugar. As the first hour passes, vanilla and osmanthus round the sharper facets, smoothing the oud into the structure rather than letting it dominate. By the second and third hour, the base fully takes over: sandalwood, heliotrope, myrrh, and amber settle into a warm, slightly powdery oriental drydown. The tobacco and tonka carry the longest, leaving a sweet-resinous skin scent that persists well into the later hours. The transition from opening to drydown is notably gradual, with each phase sliding into the next without a hard break.

Wild Tonka Freaking is a tonka-forward fragrance that pulls unusually hard toward the animalic end of the gourmand spectrum. Hyraceum and oud combine with tonka, vanilla, and tobacco to create a composition that reads simultaneously sweet and raw, with the warmth of baked sugar sitting beside the leathery depth of hyraceum. The fragrance holds appeal for wearers who want their tonka compositions loaded and unapologetic, and who don't flinch at the presence of fecal-civet materials in a sweet structure.
