The Story
Why it exists.
The beginning
Étoile Filante, shooting star, took its name and metaphor from the heavens. A ball of fire crossing a black night, the brand describes it, illuminating what lies beneath. The shooting star is a universal symbol: a wish granted, a moment of beauty that doesn't last but means everything. To carry that into a bottle, Cavallier-Belletrud reached for osmanthus, a flower he'd loved since childhood. The apricot-blossom note it carries smells of tea and honey and something quietly golden, but the osmanthus used here goes deeper, warmer, with a leathery richness that gives the fragrance its backbone. The composition draws on Grasse florals and LV refinement, translating that celestial metaphor into something you can wear close to the skin.
Osmanthus absolute occupies a strange corner of perfumery. It smells like apricot jam and osmanthus tea at once, sweet, leathery, slightly animalic under the florals. Composing in Grasse, Cavallier-Belletrud had access to some of the world's finest osmanthus absolutes through LVMH's sourcing network. But the real challenge was taming that leather-and-honey complexity into something universally wearable. Strawberry helps. It gives the top a bright, jammy immediacy that makes osmanthus approachable without diluting it.
The evolution
The first minutes are all strawberry, bright, jammy, unmistakably sweet without tipping into confectionery. It announces itself clearly, then cedes the stage. Within the hour, osmanthus arrives. Apricot blossoms bleeding into jasmine. The character shifts from fruit to flower, still sweet but more refined. Magnolia and jasmine deepen the heart into something luminous. Creamy. Waxy. The kind of white floral that doesn't shout indoles. Then white musk. Not a dramatic reveal, more like the last light before dawn. The sillage settles to something close, intimate, almost skin-like. That freshly-washed quality reviewers mention isn't the detergent interpretation, it's the musk working with clean skin to create something that feels inevitable. The drydown outlasts the room, lingering close without ever becoming overwhelming, a gentle reminder that lingers well into the day.
Cultural impact
With refillable bottles and a Grasse atelier, LV brought its standards to a wider audience. Étoile Filante translates the shooting star's brief, brilliant beauty into an olfactory experience, drawing on Grasse florals and the refined sensibility that defines the collection. The fragrance captures something both personal and universal, a fleeting moment of hope rendered in osmanthus and apricot blossom.
