The Story
Why it exists.
The beginning
Mad Tea Party was imagined in 2023 when Le Frag founder Agnieszka Lewandowska asked perfumer Jimmy Bodin to translate Lewis Carroll's line "If I had a world of my own, everything would be nonsense" into scent. The brief called for a whimsical tea-time scene that felt both nostalgic and slightly off-kilter, a fragrance where the familiar ritual of afternoon tea becomes a portal to something irrational. Bodin, working from this open brief, chose to anchor the composition in Black Tea and Whiskey rather than the expected citrus or floral, signaling immediately that this would not be a polite, civilized fragrance. The addition of Butter, Milk, and Toffee brings the richness of cream and sugar without the literal dairy; Cacao and Blackcurrant add depth and tartness that prevent the whole thing from reading as simply gourmand.
The note selection reflects a deliberate decision to use tea not as a supporting element but as a central pillar. Black Tea provides the bitter, aromatic backbone; there is no green tea freshness here, no citrus brightening the bergamot. Instead, the choice of dark, malty Black Tea paired with Whiskey creates a foundation that is simultaneously comforting and slightly intoxicating. The edible notes are not filler but active participants: Butter and Milk bring the richness of a proper cream tea, Toffee and Cacao add caramel and bitter chocolate that complicate the sweetness, and Blackcurrant offers the kind of tart, wine-like brightness that might appear in a blackcurrant preserve accompanying the tea.
The evolution
The narrative arc moves from immediate immersion into a sustained edible feast before settling into a warm, slightly smoky residue. There is no opening act in the traditional sense; the scent begins already mid-story, as if the wearer arrived at the table late and missed the introductions. The Black Tea and Blackcurrant open the heart by sheer dominance, their bitter-tart dialogue setting the stage for the dairy and confection notes that follow. Butter and Milk arrive next, their creamy weight causing the fragrance to swell in volume, while Toffee and Cacao sweeten the deal into something almost dessert-like. Iris threads through the composition as a structural element, its powdery softness tempering the richness that threatens to overwhelm. Whiskey persists longest in the heart phase, its boozy warmth acting like a narrative thread that ties the tea-time fantasy to adult sensibility. By the time the drydown arrives, the sweetness has faded and what remains is a warm, slightly smoky impression, the olfactory equivalent of a kettle left on the stove and forgotten.
Cultural impact
Mad Tea Party captures the playful spirit of a classic gathering while introducing modern twists through its black tea and blackcurrant notes. This blend reflects a cultural moment where tradition meets contemporary flair, resonating with both longtime perfume enthusiasts and newcomers. Its approachable composition encourages shared experiences, making it a subtle yet memorable part of social rituals and personal expression across diverse settings.
