The Story
Why it exists.
The beginning
Casablanca is part of La Boticá's 2021 debut collection, released alongside other popular fragrances from the house. The studio, led by Dawn Marie West, builds each release around a specific place or moment, translating environment into composition through a curated sequence of releases. Casablanca draws on the Moroccan city as its naming reference point: the brand frames the scent as an homage to place rather than an abstract exercise, letting the name carry the mood of a sun-warmed port city. The intention is place over abstraction, letting a single landscape anchor the entire arc. Within the wider lineup, Casablanca stands out for its restraint.
The composition hinges on a single botanical thread: fig leaf. Casablanca emphasizes fig leaf in a green, slightly bitter register, then layers in galbanum, a resin note listed in the formula. Davana, a herb with a fruity, boozy character, adds unexpected warmth to the blend. Orris root contributes the powdery iris facet that makes the heart feel like skin rather than fruit. The result is a fig-centered composition that feels modern and considered, built around a clean central idea rather than ornamentation. Each note earns its place. Galbanum keeps the fig from drifting into jammy sweetness.
The evolution
The first ten minutes are loud. Fig leaf and galbanum hit together, green and slightly bitter, the kind of opening that announces itself without apology. Blackcurrant adds a cool tartness underneath, sharpening the opening rather than sweetening it. There's nothing soft about it yet. The composition moves fast, and it expects you to keep up. Somewhere around the thirty-minute mark, the composition exhales. The fig fruit arrives, but it doesn't dominate. Instead it folds into orris root, which brings a powdery, skin-like softness to the heart. Cedarwood steps forward as the green notes retreat, and the transition from sharp to grounded feels natural rather than abrupt. By hour two, the fragrance has settled into a clean, woody drydown with a faint sweetness that reads more like warm skin than food. It stays close to the body for the rest of the wear, intimate rather than projecting.
Cultural impact
Casablanca reads as a modern fig-leaf composition, and it occupies a specific corner of the niche fig conversation. It appeals to wearers who want fig's green character without the sweetness, a choice that puts it at the cleaner end of the fig spectrum. Within La Boticá's lineup, it's often cited as the cleanest, most wearable of the set, the one that translates well across seasons and occasions. The fragrance doesn't chase trends or borrow heavily from established fig benchmarks; it commits to its own green, slightly bitter register and trusts the wearer to follow.
