The Story
Why it exists.
The beginning
Sur L'Herbe arrived in 2017 as part of L'Artisan Parfumeur's La Collection, a house known since 1976 for following instinct over trend. The name translates from French as 'on the grass,' and that's not metaphor. It's a fragrance named for a feeling rather than a flower, a note, or an abstract concept. The house found unexpected territory here, not a specific place or memory, but a universal sensation translated into wearability. Bergamot and lemon open the composition, bright and present in the initial moments. Neroli and green notes layer through the heart, creating an immediate freshness that carries the fragrance forward. The green character threads through from start to finish, creating a coherent narrative across the scent's development.
The composition leans on neroli, orange blossom at its most transparent, for the heart, supported by Calabrian bergamot and lemon in the opening. Green notes give the fragrance its name-sake character: not the idea of green, but the sensation of it. White musk and amberwood form a base that keeps the conversation going without ever becoming heavy. The overall structure maintains a lightness throughout, allowing the green and floral elements to remain the focus while the base provides subtle support.
The evolution
The opening presents bergamot and lemon arriving sharp and green, with a brightness that defines the first chapter. The citrus presence remains the most assertive element initially, carrying the fragrance forward with its clean character. As time passes, the citrus begins to soften and the neroli becomes more apparent, showing a gentler quality that develops gradually. The green notes deepen during this period, becoming more pronounced as they take over from the citrus as a dominant character. This progression shows the fragrance moving from its initial brightness toward something more complex and layered. The drydown arrives quietly, without announcement, as white musk and amberwood create a presence that feels close and intimate. The scent remains near the skin, present but not projecting outward, and the fade happens gradually rather than in a sudden drop.
Cultural impact
Since its 2017 launch, Sur L'Herbe has occupied a particular position in contemporary perfumery. The green, neroli-forward composition appeals to wearers seeking an intimate presence rather than a room-filling statement. L'Artisan Parfumeur positioned Sur L'Herbe in La Collection, reinforcing the fragrance's identity as part of the house's curated offerings. The fragrance represents a specific point of view within the broader fragrance landscape, one that emphasizes transparency and freshness in its character. The composition draws on traditional perfumery materials while presenting them in a way that feels contemporary and accessible.
