The beginning
The Wedding Velvet Santal | 35 arrived in 2023 as part of Kayali's limited edition releases. The name says it plainly: wedding. Velvet. Santal. A fragrance built for a specific occasion and a specific note. Santal, or sandalwood, sits at the center of everything here. Fabrice Pellegrin designed the composition around that creamy, warm wood, not as a base note that fades in and out, but as the main character throughout the wear.
The pyramid is simple and linear: jasmine and tea open, white musk and cedarwood carry the heart, sandalwood and benzoin anchor the base. No surprises in the structure. What makes it work is the balance, the tea note keeps the jasmine from going too sweet, the cedar adds a dry woody counter to the creamier sandalwood that follows. Benzoin, a balsamic resin with a vanillic warmth, softens the drydown without making it heavy. It's a composition that prioritizes comfort and wearability over complexity.
The evolution
The opening hits clean. Jasmine and tea arrive together, floral brightness and a slightly bitter herbal note that reads as green and clean, not astringent. This phase lasts about 30 minutes before the jasmine settles and the heart takes over. White musk and cedarwood form the middle. It's warm and powdery here, the cedar adding structure without harshness. This is the longest phase, stretching 2-4 hours depending on skin chemistry. The drydown is where The Wedding Velvet Santal lives most comfortably. Sandalwood and benzoin create a creamy, slightly sweet base that stays close to the skin. The projection at this point is minimal, intimate, not announced. On fabric, the scent can last 6-8 hours, with the sandalwood lingering long after the top notes have gone.
Cultural impact
As a limited 2023 release, The Wedding Velvet Santal | 35 occupies a quieter space in Kayali's lineup than their bolder oud and amber-heavy signatures. Wearers describe it as the scent of someone who does not need to announce themselves, present in a room, not dominating it. The woody-creamy character has drawn comparisons to Santal Complet and Mon Guerlain, placing it in conversation with established sandalwood fragrances at a fraction of the cost. Its moderate projection and strong longevity on fabric have made it a consistent winter favorite among those who own it.
