The Story
Why it exists.
Kayali set out to celebrate the most coveted gourmand note, Madagascar vanilla, by building a scent around its pure orchid form. Perfumer Gabriela Chelariu imagined a fragrance that captures the scent of a freshly opened vanilla pod, brightened by jasmine’s floral lift. The result, Vanilla | 28, was launched in 2018 as a unisex Eau de Parfum meant to be both a stand‑alone treat and a layering companion.

The Beginning
Kayali set out to celebrate the most coveted gourmand note, Madagascar vanilla, by building a scent around its pure orchid form. Perfumer Gabriela Chelariu imagined a fragrance that captures the scent of a freshly opened vanilla pod, brightened by jasmine’s floral lift. The result, Vanilla | 28, was launched in 2018 as a unisex Eau de Parfum meant to be both a stand‑alone treat and a layering companion.
The choice to pair vanilla orchid with brown sugar and Brazilian tonka bean creates a rare sweet‑spicy balance that avoids cloying heaviness. By anchoring the base in amberwood, musk and patchouli, the formula grounds the gourmand heart, giving the perfume a woody, powdery finish that feels like warm cashmere on skin. This structure lets the scent evolve gracefully from bright floral to deep amber warmth.
The Evolution
The opening of Vanilla | 28 greets the wearer with a luminous splash of vanilla orchid and jasmine, a creamy floral that feels like a sun‑lit garden. Within minutes the airy top yields to a buttery heart where brown sugar melts into Brazilian tonka bean, adding caramel depth and a whisper of spice. As the composition settles, amber and amberwood emerge, wrapped in soft musk and earthy patchouli, while a lingering trace of vanilla orchid stays in the background. The drydown lingers for six to eight hours, leaving a warm, powdery amber trail that remains noticeable on clothing and hair long after the perfume has settled.
Cultural Impact
Since its 2018 debut, Vanilla | 28 has become a staple in the sweet‑gourmand niche, frequently mentioned in online forums as a go‑to for those who love vanilla without the cloying sugar rush. Wearers often note its ability to stand out in a crowd of vanilla scents, thanks to the added tonka and amberwood. It’s a common recommendation for winter evenings and cozy gatherings, and its unisex appeal has broadened its fan base beyond traditional perfume circles.
