The Story
Why it exists.
The beginning
Jean Paul Gaultier built a reputation on breaking fashion conventions and channeling that same irreverent energy into fragrance. The iconic Classique bottle, shaped like the designer's corseted torso, became a symbol of sensuality worn without apology. When Classique Cabaret arrived in 2019, perfumer Fabrice Pellegrin reached for a different register within the JPG universe, one built on sweetness, warmth, and approachable elegance rather than the original's powdery power. The brief aligned naturally with the brand's identity, keeping the cheeky DNA intact while updating the olfactory narrative for a new audience.
Fabrice Pellegrin structured the composition around contrasts. Ginger and marshmallow might seem like an unusual pairing, but the spice and the sweetness balance each other in a way that feels intentional rather than chaotic. Citron keeps the opening from becoming too heavy, while ambergris in the drydown prevents the vanilla from dominating completely. The overall effect is a scent that feels playful and confident, which aligns perfectly with the JPG brand character. The marshmallow note is the key differentiator from the original Classique, giving Cabaret a softer, more modern identity that appeals to wearers who want warmth without heaviness.
The evolution
The scent opens with ginger and citron, two notes that refuse to sit quietly. Ginger brings heat and spice while citron delivers clean citrus brightness, creating a dynamic first chapter. The heart unfolds as orange blossom and marshmallow, a pairing that feels delicate at first but reveals unexpected texture as it settles. Marshmallow provides a soft, powdery quality that could tip into gimmick if unsupported, but the orange blossom keeps it grounded in floral tradition. By the drydown, vanilla and ambergris take over, forming a warm, slightly animalic base that lingers close to the skin. The ambergris adds a subtle marine and animalic lift that prevents the vanilla from becoming syrupy. The arc moves from bright and energetic to intimate and warm, with each phase offering a distinct character that rewards close attention.
Cultural impact
Since its 2019 debut, Classique Cabaret has become a cult favorite among fans of gourmand florals, often mentioned alongside Classique Pin‑Up and Love Don’t Be Shy for its sweet‑spicy twist. Wearers praise its bold projection in nightlife settings, while some note its intensity makes it a statement piece rather than everyday wear. Its limited‑edition release under Puig reinforced Gaultier’s reputation for daring, theatrical flanker creations that spark conversation.
