The Story
Why it exists.
The beginning
The name says everything. Après L'Amour, after love, is about the moment that follows: the warmth still radiating, the air thick with something shared. Fabrice Pellegrin built this around a tobacco accord, paired with rockrose and ginger to complete the composition. Rockrose and ginger complete the trifecta, creating a scent that doesn't announce itself so much as it settles into the space you've left behind. Released in 2024 as part of Infiniment Coty Paris's fourteen-piece genderless collection, it captures a very specific feeling, the exhale after, the quiet certainty that something happened here.
What makes this work is the concentration. At 20% fragrance oil, it's labeled Parfum, not just Eau de Parfum, a distinction that matters. The tobacco accord carries a sweetness that avoids the typical cigar-shop associations. Ginger arrives first, clean and almost mineral, cutting through the richness before labdanum takes over. That resinous, slightly medicinal quality of labdanum is what gives the drydown its staying power. It's not a loud fragrance, but it doesn't need to be. The scent settles close, present without announcing itself, a quiet companion to the hours ahead.
The evolution
The opening hits like ginger over warm stone, bright, almost green, with a sharpness that doesn't quite prepare you for what comes next. Shortly after, tobacco steps in, and the composition shifts. It's not aggressive tobacco; it's the honeyed, slightly sweet variety that smells like the memory of smoke rather than smoke itself. The ginger doesn't disappear, it threads through, keeping things clean. As time passes, labdanum arrives. This is where the fragrance earns its name. The resinous quality deepens, settles close to the skin, and the amber warmth amplifies. This is the after. The ginger gradually retreats and what's left is tobacco and labdanum wrapped in amber, a quiet, intimate trail that someone standing very close will notice. The overall impression is soft, close, and personal.
Cultural impact
Released in 2024 as part of Coty's landmark genderless collection, Après L'Amour brings a different take on tobacco fragrances. Where once tobacco scents defaulted to certain archetypes, this one leans into warmth and softness, resinous, close, designed for the hour after rather than the entrance. It's not competing with the bold ambers and ouds that dominate the market; it's quietly occupying a space that was previously underserved.
