The Story
Why it exists.
The beginning
Portland's literary fragrance house returns with a new chapter. Josh Meyer created A Little Secret as a fragrance that captures a certain kind of moment: something you might lean across a diner table to share, accompanied by something sweet you didn't order but couldn't resist. Cherry pie, specifically. The kind that arrives warm, the crust still holding its shape, the filling just barely set. The name says it all. Meyer built the composition around Rainier cherry, saffron, marzipan, puff pastry, rum, patchouli, and tonka, creating a fragrance that walks a line between innocent sweetness and something with more depth. The cherry note sits bright and accessible, the kind of sweetness that invites conversation.
The interesting move here is the saffron. Cherry pie usually means cinnamon, maybe nutmeg. Saffron shifts the composition, adding a faint medicinal warmth that makes the sweetness more interesting and less obvious. It doesn't announce itself loudly but sits in the background, doing the kind of work that makes other notes shine brighter by comparison. The marzipan occupies the center of the fragrance, an almond-paste presence that blends nut and vanilla, sweet and edible, with a texture that feels almost tangible.
The evolution
The opening announces itself immediately. Rainier cherry hits first, brighter than expected, fresher than Maraschino, closer to the fruit on the tree than the syrup in a jar. Saffron follows within seconds, not loud but present, adding a faint medicinal warmth that makes the sweetness more complex and layered. As the fragrance develops, the marzipan begins to assert itself, expanding and filling the space between the sugar and the pastry notes. The cherry remains present throughout, transforming but never disappearing, becoming part of the overall filling rather than remaining separate. Raw cane sugar continues to amplify sweetness without adding flavor. Puff pastry warmth provides structure and comfort. The rum note appears here as well, not as a shot of alcohol but as a warm undertone, something that loosens the composition without ever becoming alcoholic.
Cultural impact
A Little Secret arrives as cherry notes continue to appear throughout niche perfumery, reflecting a broader interest in gourmand compositions. Imaginary Authors' Portland-based house has long built its identity on narrative storytelling, and this release continues that approach with notes of Rainier cherry, saffron, marzipan, puff pastry, rum, patchouli, and tonka. The combination of bright cherry, warm saffron, and earthy patchouli creates a fragrance that sits comfortably in the modern niche landscape.
