The Story
Why it exists.
The beginning
Christos arrived in 2023, a statement of intent from Silvia Martinelli. Built on a deep amber accord, the fragrance opens with a bold, resinous character that feels both commanding and contemplative. The amber foundation provides a warm, enveloping base that suggests complexity and authenticity. There is an immediate sense of depth here, a layered quality that reveals itself slowly rather than all at once. The overall impression is of a fragrance with substance and intention, something that refuses to be easily categorized. It's a deliberate choice for those who want a scent with presence, something that lingers in memory rather than fading quietly into the background. This isn't a safe scent. It's built for commitment.
What makes Christos unusual is its frankincense architecture, appearing in both the opening and the base, threading through the entire composition like a structural element rather than a passing accent. Amber Xtreme™ does similar work, anchoring top and base alike. This double-layering of signature materials creates a fragrance that feels continuous rather than episodic. The bergamot is present, bright, but it's gone within the first thirty minutes. What remains, the smoke, the resin, the warm amber, is what the brand intended from the start.
The evolution
The first spray is amber-forward and unapologetic. Bergamot appears briefly, a flash of citrus before the smoke takes over. Frankincense announces itself with a slightly medicinal edge, the kind that smells like approaching something holy. Within thirty minutes, the bergamot is gone. What's left is resinous, warm, and insistent. The heart phase introduces labdanum's dark amber character, almost tar-like, while patchouli grounds everything with earthy depth. Rose sits quietly in the background, not fighting the smoke but providing a subtle floral counterweight to the darkness. Three to four hours in, the fragrance shifts into its drydown, vanilla and benzoin amplify the amber foundation, creating a warm, resinous sweetness that lingers on skin and clothing for six to eight hours. Sandalwood adds creaminess while pink pepper provides gentle warmth. Benzoin contributes a resinous, slightly sweet character that rounds out the composition. The final impression on skin is a lingering presence of amber and vanilla, lasting another two to three hours as a subtle trace.
Cultural impact
Christos arrived in 2023 as one of Giardini Di Toscana's more assertive statements. Where other releases in the collection explore different facets of Tuscan memory, Christos leans into resinous depth and smoky character, a fragrance that asks for commitment rather than offering comfort. The sillage and longevity suggest it found its audience: people who want a fragrance that performs, that leaves a trail, that doesn't soften itself for politeness. In a collection known for varied interpretations of Tuscan heritage, Christos stands apart as something that reaches for something ancient and elemental.
