Why it exists.
The beginning
Ambreine began with a question every natural perfumer eventually faces: can amber, that most storied of fragrance accords, be built entirely from raw botanicals and still hold the weight of its name? Ananda Wilson, who provides the creative guidance behind Gather Perfume's compositions, treats amber as something worth rebuilding note by note rather than reaching for a pre-made base. For this release, she set out to reconstruct that classic profile: the round warmth, the resinous depth, the sense of something ancient and golden, working entirely from sourced naturals. The result was Ambreine, which launched in 2015. The accord that emerged from that process reads as a deliberate study in texture.
What makes the composition work is how the pieces hold their own ground. The bergamot opens with a crisp, slightly bitter brightness, the kind of citrus snap that wakes up everything beneath it without ever slipping into sharpness. The orange blossom sits in the middle, bridging the top and the heart with a soft, honeyed floral that never disappears into either camp. The oud is carefully weighted, present enough to register but never loud, adding gravity without tipping into smoke.
The evolution
The opening doesn't waste time. Bergamot cuts in with that crisp, slightly bitter sparkle, and for the first stretch you're wearing something that reads almost like a cologne: clean, sharp, awake. Then the orange blossom arrives, and the whole thing shifts. It rounds out, softens, and the Bourbon vanilla starts threading through underneath, warm and slightly oaky. The heart is where this fragrance lives for the longest stretch: a dense, resinous amber accord built on sandalwood, tonka bean, and orris root, with the oud sitting just low enough to give everything weight without ever dominating. What surprises is how long the orris holds. That powdery, slightly rooty iris quality keeps the heart from going purely sweet, adding a cool, almost earthy backbone that keeps the vanilla honest. As the hours pass, the drydown becomes something quieter and more intimate.
Cultural impact
Ambreine has drawn attention from wearers who appreciate oud-amber compositions built on real depth rather than on synthetic sweetness. The fragrance has been noted for its mature take on vanilla, offering a richness that rewards time on the skin. As one of Gather Perfume's 2015 releases, it helped set the tone for what the house could offer: botanical materials treated with the same care and intention that traditional perfumery gives to its most storied accords.
