Heritage
A house, in its own words
The story of Gather Perfume begins with Ananda Wilson, a natural perfumer who built her expertise through dedicated study and mentorship in the art of botanical perfumery. Wilson pursued advanced studies with Charna of Providence Perfume Company, an established practitioner who has been teaching aromatherapy and natural perfumery since 1996. This educational foundation equipped Wilson with the technical knowledge and sensory development essential to working with natural materials, which present distinct challenges compared to synthetic fragrance compounds. Wilson established Gather Perfume as a vehicle for expressing her vision of natural perfumery rooted in place and provenance. The year 2015 marked a significant chapter for the house, with the launch of ten distinct fragrances including Tea Season, Ambreine, Basil, Rainwater Rose, Bluegrass, Forest Flora, Vetiver Cocoa, Botany's Daughter, and Chandra. This concentrated release demonstrated Wilson's ambitious approach to natural perfumery, proving that botanical materials could achieve the complexity and longevity typically associated with conventional fine fragrance. Operating from her studio in Western Massachusetts, Wilson maintains direct relationships with her ingredient sources, whether those are wild-harvested plants from nearby landscapes, botanicals cultivated in her own garden, or rare natural materials sourced internationally. The name Gather itself speaks to the brand's philosophy of collection and curation, drawing from the land and the seasons to build fragrance compositions with intention and purpose. Gather Perfume operates on a fundamental conviction that natural materials can produce compelling, complex fragrances worthy of serious attention. This belief separates the house from perfumers who treat botanicals as limiting or primitive ingredients. Wilson approaches natural perfumery as both an art form and a craft requiring mastery of material behavior, seasonal variation, and the unpredictable character of plant-derived aromatics. The brand rejects the convenience of synthetic materials in favor of the challenges inherent in working with ingredients that respond to soil conditions, harvest timing, and extraction methods. Gather's philosophy centers on transparency and authenticity in the supply chain. Every aromatic used in their perfumes originates from identifiable sources, whether foraged from wild landscapes, grown in Wilson's garden, or sourced from trusted suppliers of natural materials. This traceability allows the house to speak confidently about provenance and ensures that each fragrance tells a coherent story about its ingredients. The philosophy extends to the house's complete rejection of pre-made base accords or blended aromatics purchased from external suppliers. By creating every component of each perfume internally, Gather maintains the integrity of its creative vision and can modify any aspect of a formula in response to sensory evaluation. The natural perfumery also embraces the seasonality and variability inherent in botanical materials, viewing these constraints not as limitations but as creative parameters that shape the final character of each scent.
