The Story
Why it exists.
The beginning
When Fendi returned to fragrance in 2012, three perfumers shaped the statement: François Demachy, Delphine Lebeau-Krowiakj, and Benoist Lapouza. The goal was a masculine scent for mysterious, sophisticated urban men, fresh and modern. The name carries the collection's weight: Fan di Fendi. Citrus opened the conversation. Bergamot and mandarin orange pull in opposite directions, with basil adding an herbal lift that keeps it from being just another fresh masculine. Then leather arrived to finish it. The bergamot brightens the basil while the citrus freshness cuts through the aromatic herbs, creating an immediate impression that feels both crisp and intriguing.
The choice of leather as a base note for a masculine scent feels obvious until you remember what Fendi built. A leather goods house, known for its craftsmanship and family-run legacy, uses leather here as a natural extension of its expertise. The tonka bean adds sweetness that prevents the leather from reading harsh, while Indonesian patchouli gives it earth and depth. As the fragrance dries down, the leather softens and the patchouli emerges, adding an earthy, slightly smoky quality that enriches the overall composition.
The evolution
The opening arrives bright and direct. Citrus in full force, bergamot and mandarin orange pulling in opposite directions, with basil adding an herbal lift that keeps it from being just another fresh masculine. The heart is where the composition earns its complexity. Cardamom brings warmth with a faintly medicinal edge. Geranium adds a green, rosy quality that softens the spice. Pink pepper offers a delicate citrus-floral lift. Texas cedar takes over. The woody character deepens as the citrus disappears, becoming the bridge to the drydown. The base arrives quietly. Leather holds the foundation. Tonka bean adds sweet, vanillic warmth. Indonesian patchouli brings earth and a touch of smoke. The leather and tonka bean outlast everything else, lingering as the fragrance settles into its final phase.
Cultural impact
Fan di Fendi pour Homme arrived in 2012. The blend of citrus, aromatic herbs, warm spices, and leather creates a fragrance that occupies its own space within masculine perfumery. Leather as a base note, honoring the Maison's core material, gives the scent a distinctive character. The FF logo appears throughout the fragrance line's visual identity, tying each scent to the house's signature symbol.
