The Story
Why it exists.
The beginning
Red Wood arrived in 2019 under the direction of DSQUARED², the fragrance arm of the Milan-based fashion house founded by Canadian twins Dean and Dan Caten. The twins, who moved from Toronto to establish their label in Italy, have built their fragrance collection around woody materials since launching He Wood in 2007. For Red Wood, they collaborated with master perfumer Olivier Cresp, whose decades of work across multiple houses informed the fragrance's clean, structured arc. The name and the bottle's red-tinged design speak directly to the brand's recurring woody identity, now filtered through a contemporary fruity-floral lens.
The note selection reflects a deliberate philosophy: fruity brightness invites first attention, floral warmth holds it, and woody structure ensures longevity. Each tier serves a purpose. Cranberry and pink pepper catch attention in the opening moments. Lychee, magnolia, and rose sustain interest through the heart. Amberwood, cedarwood, and musk create the drydown that justifies wearing the fragrance. This layering logic mirrors the brand's approach to fashion itself, each element purposeful, the overall result polished and wearable across a range of occasions.
The evolution
The fragrance moves through three distinct chapters. Cranberry opens the narrative with sharp, juice-like brightness before pink pepper introduces a spice that catches the attention without demanding it. As the top recedes, lychee takes center stage in the heart, its watery sweetness bridging fruit and flower. Magnolia and rose expand the floral dimension, their combined effect feeling plush rather than heavy. The drydown chapter belongs entirely to wood: amberwood adds warmth and a subtle resinous quality while cedarwood delivers the dry, clean finish that the brand's identity demands. Musk lingers in the background, adding skin proximity without animalic weight.
Cultural impact
Red Wood presents a bright, effervescent opening paired with an accessible character. The fragrance offers a fruity-floral experience with woody depth, maintaining the contemporary edge that defines the DSQUARED² house.
