The Story
Why it exists.
The beginning
Velvet Amber Sage arrived in 2026 as the latest entry in Dolce&Gabbana's Velvet collection, a line that has added steadily to the house's catalog of fragrances with a focus on richer, more enveloping compositions. The intention behind the scent was to take the herbaceous clarity of clary sage and let it sink into something sweeter, denser, more cocooning. Jordi Fernández, the perfumer behind the composition, layered aromatic green against toasted praline, then let cinnamon and roasted tonka bean carry the emotional middle. The base settles into amber and cedarwood, lending the composition its foundation, the architecture that holds the sweeter and spicier elements in place.
Clary sage absolute is the boldest choice in the opening. It's an herbal material that can read medicinal or dirty when handled carelessly, and the absolute in particular carries more of the herb's animalic, almost leathery facets. Fernández chose the absolute on purpose, letting that rougher edge anchor the sweetness rather than fight it, which gives the composition its slightly raw, almost savory undertone beneath all the sugar. The roasted tonka bean absolute in the heart is another deliberate move.
The evolution
The first spray announces itself with a green flash, clary sage absolute hitting sharp and aromatic before the praline even registers. Soon after the sugar arrives, toasted and nutty, and the composition starts to read warmer, less like an apothecary shelf and more like a bakery after closing. As the opening fades, cinnamon takes over, building alongside roasted tonka bean into something that smells like spiced caramel cooling on a marble counter, dense and slightly resinous. The heart holds steady for a few hours, never losing that praline sweetness but adding a faintly smoky bitterness underneath, a slow-building complexity that rewards patience. Eventually the base fully arrives. Amber and cedarwood take over, and the composition quiets down, trading its earlier flamboyance for restraint.
Cultural impact
Velvet Amber Sage sits comfortably among the warmer, sweeter offerings in the broader Velvet collection, a fragrance clearly intended for cooler weather and evening wear. It has been classified within the oriental spicy family, a category that reflects its layered amber base, toasted praline, and pronounced cinnamon note. The seasonal and occasion-based reception among fragrance enthusiasts has trended toward fall and evening use, in keeping with the composition's density and sweetness.
