The Story
Why it exists.
The beginning
The Light Blue family began with the 2001 citrus fragrance that captured a certain Mediterranean optimism. By 2012, Dolce & Gabbana wanted to expand the collection with something that explored different corners of the Italian coastline, Portofino for women, Stromboli for men. Portofino offered a different atmosphere, a place where the glamour of the Riviera meets the quieter rhythms of a historic harbor town. The perfumer worked with fresh litchi and ambrette seed to evoke the brightness of that coastal light, then layered in osmanthus and iris to add a dimension of softness and complexity that the original composition did not pursue. This was not a simple extension of the original scent.
What makes this composition distinctive is the interplay between the top notes and the heart. Litchi delivers a tropical, slightly watery sweetness in the opening that feels bright without being aggressive. Ambrette seed grounds that brightness with a musky, slightly nutty quality that prevents the fragrance from sliding into pure sweetness. Osmanthus brings something more complex: apricot-floral, honeyed, with a warmth that feels sunlit rather than heavy.
The evolution
The opening is the most distinctive phase of this fragrance. Litchi and ambrette together create a brightness that reads almost cool, not aquatic exactly, but adjacent to that feeling. The ambrette has a musky, slightly nutty quality that keeps it from being purely sweet. After thirty minutes or so, the osmanthus and iris take over and the scent softens considerably. The florals here are creamy, almost plush, nothing sharp or green. Then the base arrives: amber, patchouli, and musk. The amber and patchouli warm the composition, with the patchouli adding a faint earthy, slightly damp quality that prevents the drydown from becoming just another amber-musk accord. This is a fragrance that stays close to the skin throughout its development, asking you to lean in rather than announce yourself.
Cultural impact
Dreaming in Portofino offers a different interpretation of the Mediterranean inspiration that runs through the Light Blue collection. Where the original Light Blue leaned into bright citrus, this fragrance explores the softer, more intimate side of that spirit. The osmanthus-iris heart gives it a warmth and complexity that feels appropriate for slower moments, for occasions that ask for something present but not overpowering.
