The Story
Why it exists.
The beginning
Russell Weiss of Deep Field Aromatics set out to capture the vivid blue-green atmosphere of towering conifer forests. Working with the Chicago house founded in 2019, Weiss chose to abandon traditional perfumery structures, finding that introducing separate opening notes would dilute the authentic forest experience he sought. The heart notes of Balsam Fir, Pine, Yuzu, Citrus, Ginger, and Cardamom represent the entire olfactory landscape of Viridian. Rather than simulating a journey into the forest, the fragrance aims to place the wearer within the forest itself, maintaining the raw, immediate presence of a conifer environment. Deep Field Aromatics' commitment to small-batch production and raw botanical extracts aligns perfectly with this approach, allowing the natural character of each note to emerge without artificial enhancement.
Deep Field Aromatics selects raw botanical extracts to ensure each note in Viridian expresses its genuine character. The decision to omit traditional opening and drydown phases stems from a philosophical commitment to representing nature authentically. In a forest, there is no artificial transition between air and trees; the environment encompasses all simultaneously. By applying this principle to perfumery, Russell Weiss creates a scent experience that mirrors natural landscapes. The pairing of Balsam Fir with Yuzu represents the intersection of forest floor and morning light, while Ginger and Cardamom add the warmth of earth and spice found beneath the canopy.
The evolution
Without distinct opening or drydown phases, Viridian unfolds as a continuous forest immersion. Balsam Fir and Pine create immediate aromatic presence, their green resinous character establishing the core olfactory landscape. Yuzu introduces sharp citrus brightness that prevents the conifer notes from becoming heavy, while Citrus elements add complementary bright accents that layer with the evergreen foundation. Ginger emerges within the first minutes, its spicy warmth adding dimension to the initial botanical burst. Cardamom weaves through the composition, providing aromatic complexity that enriches the interplay between citrus brightness and evergreen depth. As the fragrance develops over hours, these notes do not dramatically transform but rather shift in prominence and interplay. The citrus and ginger may recede slightly, allowing the fir and pine to dominate in the later hours, while the cardamom provides sustained aromatic interest. The result is not a linear progression but a continuous conversation between forest and citrus, spice and green.
Cultural impact
Since its 2020 debut, Viridian has become a touchstone for scent lovers seeking an un‑filtered forest experience. Wearers praise its crisp green heart and the way the citrus‑ginger opening sets it apart from typical woody aromatics. It’s often mentioned alongside Deep Field’s Jade Fir as the brand’s signature conifer line, carving a niche among indie fragrances that value authentic botanical sourcing over synthetic flash.
