The Story
Why it exists.
The beginning
The Instinct series gave Beckham's fragrance line a second act, and this 2008 release from perfumer Béatrice Piquet introduced a different direction. The composition builds from bright citrus through warm spices into a rich, intimate base. Star anise and cardamom appear in the heart, warm, slightly exotic spices that bring depth and complexity. White amber and vanilla anchor the base, creating close-to-skin warmth that doesn't announce itself but refuses to leave. It launched in 2008 as part of a growing Beckham portfolio, each fragrance another chapter in the brand's translation of personal style into wearable scent.
What makes After Dark distinctive is the structural choice. The citrus top is bright, opening with energy before yielding to warmth. Star anise carries aniseed character that borders on medicinal on first spray but smooths into something aromatic and inviting within the heart phase. The white amber base bridges citrus and vanilla without either drowning the other. It's a careful handoff, three distinct movements, that keeps the scent from flattening into background noise.
The evolution
The opening is citrus-driven: mandarin orange and grapefruit burst with tart, clean energy. For the early stage, it reads as crisp and fresh, almost casual in its approachability. Then the hand-off begins. Star anise appears first, its aniseed warmth creeping in around the edges of the bergamot. Cardamom follows, adding aromatic depth. Black pepper flickers, never dominant but present enough to keep the heart from going soft too soon. As the development continues, the citrus recedes. White amber takes over as a dominant force, wrapping the remaining composition in a warm, slightly powdery embrace. Vanilla slips in quietly, sweet, creamy, close to the skin. The drydown stays intimate rather than projecting, and the result is skin-warm and persistent, the kind of smell someone notices only when they're standing beside you.
Cultural impact
After Dark occupies a specific niche in the Beckham lineup: a fragrance with a different character than the daytime offerings. It's neither the boldest nor the most celebrated in the range, but it offers a distinct option for those seeking warmth and intimacy in their scent. The star anise and white amber pairing gives it a notable character, and the balance between these notes creates something that stands apart from more straightforward masculine fragrances.
