The Story
Why it exists.
The beginning
Paper + Lantern arrived in 2011, composed by perfumer Emily Lape as part of Crow's water-based perfume line. The water-based format shaped how the ingredients read on skin, lending the composition a fluid, weightless character from the very first spray. Rather than building dense architecture with heavy base materials, Lape worked within the constraints of the medium itself, letting the formula's lightness guide the creative direction. The result is a scent that hovers close to the skin and feels more like a breeze passing through than a structure holding still. Crow's interest in minimalist, concept-driven fragrance gave Lape room to treat the brief poetically, building No. 4 around a pairing of images rather than a pyramid of weighty materials.
What makes Paper + Lantern distinctive is the restraint of its composition. Aloe vera and green tea carry the fragrance with a clarity many compositions lack. The aloe cools without slipping into something clinical, and the green tea threads through both the opening and the later stages, binding everything into a single, continuous herbal arc. The citrus fruits lift the top without tipping into sweetness, and the way they interact with the aloe gives the opening a brightness that feels natural rather than forced.
The evolution
The first ten minutes are all aloe, cool and slightly vegetal, the way the inside of a freshly cut stem smells. Citrus surfaces quickly, lifting the aloe into something brighter, almost sparkling, before the green tea emerges and unifies everything into a single, cool, herbal wash. There's no dramatic turn here. No surprise twist from a base note no one mentioned. The fragrance stays in its lane: clean, aqueous, faintly spicy on the tail end, like fresh ginger dissolved in warm water. The middle hours settle into the green tea in full, the aloe receding just enough to let the steeped, tannic quality of the leaves take center stage. The citrus quiets down too, moving from sparkle to a softer hum that sits underneath the tea. By the later stages, what remains is a close, skin-warmed trace of tea with that faint citrus peel still flickering at the edges.
Cultural impact
Paper + Lantern is a water-based, ultra-light composition, closer in feel to a fine mist than a traditional spray perfume. The format gives the scent an airy, transparent quality that sets it apart from heavier niche and mainstream fare, and the choice of aloe vera, green tea, and citrus as the core trio reinforces that lightness. There are no dense base materials competing for attention, no thick resins or sweet vanillas muddying the composition. Just clean, cool, green notes that move like vapor across the skin.
