The Story
Why it exists.
The beginning
Hands Off landed in 2025 as Contraband's leather entry, a composition built around the kind of leather that reads as something you've already worn in. The name does the work upfront, carrying a clear boundary in two words. It's a scent designed to sit close rather than broadcast, and the choice of materials pulls it toward warmth without tipping into noise. Saffron and hazelnut give it a gourmand flicker without tipping into sweetness, and the oud underneath pulls the whole thing into warmer, smokier territory. Saffron arrives with a sharp, almost metallic edge, while hazelnut softens it with something toasted and rounded. Together they create an opening that feels approachable, even inviting, before the composition settles deeper.
What's interesting here is the hazelnut-saffron pairing doing the heavy lifting upfront. The nuttiness softens the saffron's sharp metallic edge, giving the leather something to settle into rather than crash against. There's a real dialogue between those two notes, almost like a call and response where each one tempers the other. The oud in the heart isn't the dense, resinous kind; it's woody and atmospheric, a bridge between the gourmand top and the leather-vanilla base.
The evolution
The first ten minutes are a negotiation between hazelnut and saffron, with the nut leaning warm and the saffron leaning almost metallic. There's a brief moment where the two feel like they're from different compositions, each holding its own ground. Then patchouli slides in from underneath, and the woody notes start building a kind of dry architecture that the oud fills in. The patchouli brings an earthy, slightly dirty quality that grounds everything, preventing the opening from floating away into pure spice. By the thirty-minute mark, the leather arrives, and it's not shy. It takes up real space, wrapping around the vanilla in the base without being swallowed by it. The leather here carries weight but not heaviness, a presence that registers without dominating. The drydown is where this earns its keep. The saffron burns off completely. The hazelnut fades to a suggestion.
Cultural impact
Hands Off sits within Contraband's debut lineup as the brand's dedicated leather entry, a composition that takes a different approach to the category. What sets it apart is the hazelnut-saffron opening, an unusual choice that keeps the composition grounded rather than austere. The pairing brings a warmth and approachability that softens what could otherwise be a more severe leather profile. The hazelnut gives the opening an almost toasted, edible quality, while the saffron adds brightness and lift. Together they create an entry point that feels modern and considered.
