The Story
Why it exists.
The beginning
The X Twist line explores single ingredients from multiple angles, twisting a core material until it reveals something unexpected. In 2017, Clive Christian turned to baies roses, the dried pink peppercorns used in French cuisine, as the concept's anchor. The twist here: a ginger opener, deliberately sharp and uncomplicated, paired with white pepper to amplify the effect. Pink pepper arrives in the heart not as fire but as warmth, rosy, slightly sweet, unexpectedly soft. The structure strips away everything safe. No florals, no sweetness, no soft landing. Just material that means something.
What makes this pyramid work is the contrast between opening and close. Ginger and white pepper create a bright, almost clinical freshness, the sensation of clean air, sharp and immediate. Pink pepper in the heart then redirects the energy, shifting from sharpness to warmth without losing momentum. The base of cedar and vetiver is where Clive Christian departs from expectation: rather than warmth building, coolness arrives. Dry wood, green vetiver, a finish that reads as airy and restrained. The result is a fragrance that moves in one direction, then another, never the trajectory you assumed.
The evolution
The opening announces itself with ginger's clean heat, a bright spark that reads as energizing rather than aggressive. White pepper accompanies it, adding bite without bitterness. For the first 30 to 45 minutes, the composition feels almost citrus-forward in its brightness. The transition begins when pink pepper enters the heart. The sharpness recedes. What remains is warmer, softer, faintly rosy, the spice becomes an aroma rather than a sensation. This phase holds for an hour, maybe more, depending on skin. Around the 90-minute mark, cedar and vetiver take over. The warmth of the heart does not disappear, it is simply grounded now, settled into dry wood and green, slightly earthy vetiver that extends the wear for several additional hours. The drydown is quiet, intimate, and surprisingly persistent.
Cultural impact
The 2017 X Twist Baies Rose arrives as part of a deliberate collection strategy, the X Twist line presenting variations on a single aromatic concept. This one leans into the fresh-spicy-woody register that defines much of Clive Christian's approach: confident, composed, unapologetically direct. The ginger-pepper opening sets it apart from softer interpretations of pink pepper, making a statement rather than an impression.
