The Story
Why it exists.
The beginning
Clinique launched Happy in Bloom 2006 as part of a seasonal limited edition tradition, new bottles each year, designed to delight existing fans of the line. Happy in Bloom 2013 arrived in a collector's flacon featuring cheerful flowers and ladybugs on the bottle. Clinique designed this edition to make the world gentler, lighter, and sweeter. The original 2006 formula provided the foundation: apricot sweetness, yellow florals, and a woody base that gave it structure. The 2013 edition continued that DNA while introducing subtle variations within the same framework. The apricot note opens with a sun ripened, juicy sweetness that feels bright and inviting, while the yellow florals create a buttery, airy heart that gently unfolds over time.
The apricot note is the real hook here, delivering a bright, juicy sweetness that opens the composition with a gourmand flair. Paired with a frozen fruit accord in the opening, it creates a fresh, luminous burst that feels lively yet not harsh. The heart blends mimosa and freesia together, creating a yellow floral effect that sits between buttery and airy. Then there's the incense. It's not obvious at first, this isn't smoky or church-like. Instead, it threads through the florals like a quiet counterpoint, adding depth without demanding attention.
The evolution
The opening hits fast, apricot sweetness and frozen fruit accord arrive together in the first minutes, bright and immediate. You get maybe an hour of this fruity brightness before the florals take over. Freesia and mimosa move in around the 30-minute mark, softening the fruit into something warmer and more complex. The incense becomes noticeable here too, not as a smoke signal but as a grounding presence that keeps the sweetness from floating away. By the second hour, the woody base begins to assert itself. White woods settle underneath everything, turning the fragrance from bright to powdery-soft. The incense doesn't disappear, it deepens, becoming more intimate as the hours pass. On most skin types, expect 4-6 hours of wear. On fabric, it can linger until the next morning.
Cultural impact
Clinique has released limited editions annually under the Happy in Bloom umbrella since 2006, each iteration building on the original's apricot-forward sweetness. The 2013 edition stands apart from the core Happy line, which skews citrus-bright and fresh. Here, the addition of incense creates a warmer, more complex character that deviates from the expected fruity-floral template. Community ratings hover in the solid-good range, with particular appreciation for its spring seasonal character.
