The Story
Why it exists.
The beginning
See By Chloé arrived in 2012 as a Coty-produced extension of the fashion line. Perfumer Michel Almairac built it around a simple idea: brightness that doesn't apologize for itself. The opening pairs crisp apple blossom with citrusy bergamot in a way that feels immediate and intentional. There's a greenness to the apple note, something that smells like the tree itself rather than a synthetic approximation. The heart reveals jasmine and ylang-ylang, their creamy sweetness threading through the composition without overwhelming the fresh opening. The base settles into something softer, a quiet warmth that feels earned rather than tacked on. The bottle, inspired by vintage bird cages, added a whimsy that felt organic rather than decorative.
The structure is deceptively simple, apple blossom and bergamot opening, jasmine and ylang-ylang heart, musky sandalwood base. But the interplay between the sharp citrus and the creamy florals gives it a tension that prevents it from reading as generic. The ylang-ylang is the quiet operator here, adding a tropical warmth that keeps the powdery drydown from becoming dusty. It's the kind of composition that rewards attention: spray it once and it's pleasant; pay attention and it's actually quite clever.
The evolution
The opening hits clean, apple blossom and bergamot arriving together, neither overpowering the other. There's a greenness to the apple note, not the synthetic candy kind, but something that smells like the tree itself. Thirty minutes in, the jasmine takes over, softer now, and the ylang-ylang threads through with its characteristic creamy sweetness. The bergamot fades but doesn't disappear, a quiet reminder of where we started. By the second hour, the drydown settles. Sandalwood and musk create something skin-adjacent, and the vanilla adds just enough warmth to make the whole thing feel intimate rather than loud. This is a fragrance that wants to be close. You are left with a musky sweetness on the wrist and the ghost of something floral on a scarf.
Cultural impact
See By Chloé arrived in 2012 as an extension of the fashion house's collection. The opening pairs crisp apple blossom with bergamot in a way that feels immediate and intentional, neither heavy nor synthetic. There's a greenness to the apple note, something that smells like the actual tree rather than a laboratory approximation. As the top notes soften, jasmine takes center stage, joined by ylang-ylang with its characteristic creamy sweetness. The bergamot lingers in the background, a quiet thread connecting back to the beginning.
