The Story
Why it exists.
The beginning
Lanvin, founded in 1889 by Jeanne-Marie Lanvin, brought the same commitment to exceptional materials from fashion into perfumery when it established Lanvin Parfums SA in 1924. The house has maintained this standard across decades. For Modern Princess, the brand turned to Christophe Raynaud of Firmenich in 2016. The mandate was specific: capture the color red in olfactory form. Red as passion. Red as the forbidden. Red as something irreducibly attractive. The goal was never to build another sweet princess fragrance but to create something with genuine edge and desire.
Raynaud designed Modern Princess to capture something beyond the obvious sweetness typically associated with fruity-floral fragrances. The blackcurrant and apple in the opening create a tartness that prevents the scent from becoming cloying. Freesia and jasmine in the heart bring elegance without becoming heavy or overly feminine. The vanilla orchid and white musk in the drydown provide warmth that feels inviting rather than overwhelming, while woody notes ensure the fragrance has structure and longevity. This combination makes Modern Princess versatile enough for evening wear while still being appropriate for casual daytime use.
The evolution
The fragrance opens with blackcurrant and apple, establishing immediate fruity brightness that feels both tart and inviting. This opening makes an impact without being aggressive, setting up the transition to the heart where freesia and jasmine take over. These florals add softness and a flirtatious quality, with jasmine bringing warmth that bridges the gap between the bright opening and the deeper base. The drydown introduces vanilla orchid, white musk, and woody notes, shifting the composition toward warmth and elegance. Vanilla orchid provides creamy depth, white musk adds a clean softness, and woody notes ground the entire experience with subtle sophistication. This arc moves from fruity immediacy to floral softness to warm, composed elegance.
Cultural impact
Modern Princess combines red currant and Pink Lady apple with quiet sophistication in its jasmine-muski drydown. The top notes burst with tart, fruity energy, but the heart reveals something more complex. Jasmine brings a duality that is both delicate and warm, adding depth without heaviness. The drydown softens into a skin-close warmth where white musk and vanilla orchid linger, creating a sweetness that is intimate rather than obvious. Sweet enough to appeal broadly, with enough texture and refinement to avoid the generic trap.
