The Story
Why it exists.
The beginning
In 2015, Burberry broke from its own calendar. The Brit line had always arrived for autumn, warm, restrained, classically British. Then came Brit Splash, a limited summer edition that disrupted everything. The brand called it 'the electric energy of London in the heat and water awakening sun-hot skin.' A brief, vivid idea, captured by Francis Kurkdjian. Not a year-round signature. A seasonal interrupt.
The note structure is quietly unusual. Rosemary at the top is typical in fougères and masculine orientals, not in aquatics, where citrus and marine notes dominate. Here it anchors the honeydew melon, keeping that sweetness from floating into generic territory. Galbanum adds a green, slightly bitter edge that sharpens everything. It's the difference between a template aquatic and something with a point of view.
The evolution
The opening announces itself immediately. Honeydew melon arrives sweet and cool, but the rosemary dominates, herbal, almost camphoraceous, like walking through a garden after rain. The galbanum keeps the sweetness honest. For the first twenty to thirty minutes, this is a rosemary experience wearing a melon costume. The heart develops more slowly than expected, which works in its favor. Around the thirty-minute mark, the aquatic notes emerge, soft, ozonic, almost dewy. Violet and cyclamen add a powdery floral quality that smooths the transition. This middle phase is gentle and unobtrusive, lasting perhaps two hours before the composition begins to settle. The drydown belongs to moss and vetiver. Earthy, slightly root-like, they ground the melon sweetness and prevent the aquatic quality from floating away entirely. Musk provides warmth and intimacy without weight. The final phase stays close to the skin, perhaps another hour before the fragrance disappears entirely. What remains is a faint memory of green and clean, like fabric dried in summer air.
Cultural impact
Brit Splash marked Burberry's first deliberate seasonal break, a limited summer release in a line known for autumn arrivals. In the 2015 fragrance landscape, aquatics were well-worn territory, but Burberry brought their own sensibility: restrained, British, slightly herbal. The rosemary top note sets it apart from the template aquatic, giving it an aromatic edge that appeals to men who want freshness without anonymity.
