The Story
Why it exists.
The beginning
Arcana Craves released Pumpkins Crave Porches in 2016, part of a seasonal series the brand called "Porch Season Scents." The collection draws on objects and moments that carry their own atmosphere, turning the familiar into something worth wearing. Porches was an obvious fit for that sensibility. The brand treated the threshold between outside and inside as a mood worth bottling, and Pumpkins Crave Porches became its particular expression of that suspended state. Sweet fruit and coastal air share the same wooden railing in the composition, which mixes blackberry, blackcurrant, pumpkin, coconut, sweet notes, herbs, and salt air into a single, cohesive pour.
The composition works because it refuses to choose a lane. Blackberry and blackcurrant bring depth to the opening, almost jammy in their concentration, while pumpkin adds a grounded, vegetal warmth that keeps the fruit from floating off. Coconut softens the edges, sweet notes round everything out, and salt air does the unexpected work of gluing it all together. What makes it unusual is the salt. Most pumpkin fragrances lean fully into the kitchen, heavy on spice and butter and the suggestion of baked goods. This one keeps a window open.
The evolution
The opening belongs to the berries. Blackberry and blackcurrant arrive together, dense and almost confectionery, with a burst of coconut underneath that softens the tartness into something creamy. There's a whisper of sweet notes right behind it, and the pumpkin is there too, but quieter, a vegetal warmth rather than anything pie-spiced. As the composition moves past the opening, the salt air has started to do its work. It lifts the fruit and cools it, threading through the coconut in a way that keeps the sweetness from settling. The herbs grow louder here, pushing back against the sweetness, giving the composition a green, slightly wild edge. The pumpkin deepens into something earthier, less candied. The berries recede as the herbs and salt come forward, and the balance shifts toward something more grounded and savory. In the later stages, the drydown is softer and more intimate.
Cultural impact
Pumpkins Crave Porches sits within a small, beloved corner of indie fragrance: the autumnal seasonal release. It was part of the brand's "Porch Season Scents" series, and that context matters to how collectors wore it. The unusual inclusion of salt air in a pumpkin composition made it a talking point among indie fragrance enthusiasts who tend to track how houses bend gourmand tropes. Today, with the line discontinued, it exists as a decanted curiosity, a reminder of a particular approach to seasonal perfumery.
