The Story
Why it exists.
The beginning
Lustre was created as part of Amouage's Essences collection, using a double-infusion process in sandalwood and artisanal oakwood barrels, six months of aging, and a thirty percent pure perfume oil concentration. The result is a fragrance that feels built for coherence. The process itself functions as both method and metaphor, with the sandalwood-infused base oils reflecting the heart note that will eventually dominate the wearer. Perfumers Julien Rasquinet and the Amouage creative team selected materials that would reward the extended maturation period, knowing that resinous materials like labdanum and myrrh deepen considerably when given time to marry with their carriers.
The note selection reflects a philosophy of contrast and complement. Cardamom and iris create an opening that is simultaneously spicy and cool, establishing a tension that sandalwood resolves in the heart. The drydown's abundance of resinous materials speaks to Amouage's preference for depth and longevity, with each material chosen for its ability to layer rather than compete. The presence of both cypriol and styrax alongside sweeter materials like benzoin and vanilla creates a base that walks a line between sacred and sensual, warm and slightly dark.
The evolution
The fragrance begins with cardamom's sharp, aromatic presence immediately asserting itself, a brief but confident introduction that gives way to iris and its powdery coolness within minutes. As the heart develops, sandalwood takes command, its creamy texture wrapping around the patchouli and cedarwood to create a forest-like stillness. The transition to the drydown is gradual, with amber and benzoin appearing first, their sweet resinous warmth paving the way for the deeper materials. Myrrh and labdanum arrive next, their sacred, slightly leathery quality lending gravitas, while cypriol and styrax introduce subtle smoky notes that add complexity without aggression. Vanilla and tonka bean appear last, their soft sweetness lingering on skin for hours.
Cultural impact
Lustre sits at an interesting point in Amouage's evolution. The Essences collection represents a different direction for the house, and Lustre itself has earned strong marks for longevity and sillage. Those drawn to the fragrance tend to want Amouage's signature warmth and resinous depth but in a more cohesive, less sprawling composition. The woody foundation from sandalwood and cedar provides the core, with patchouli adding depth and contrast. The amber and labdanum bring brightness and resinous warmth, while benzoin and myrrh layer in additional complexity without harshness.
