The Story
Why it exists.
The beginning
Absinthe and Laudanum in the Afternoon takes its name from two of the nineteenth century's most notorious substances, a potent green spirit and an opium tincture prescribed by physicians and poets alike. The composition uses galbanum, wormwood, and lavender to create a green, bitter, slightly medicinal spine, capturing the absinthe note in olfactory form. Against that, jasmine and tonka offer unexpected sweetness and creaminess. The result is a fragrance that asks you to slow down and pay attention. It evokes the suspended, lingering quality of an afternoon that seems to stretch beyond its ordinary boundaries, where the light takes on a particular richness and time itself feels less urgent.
The interplay between these contrasts defines the composition. Absinthe and laudanum share a bitter, green, intensely aromatic character, which could easily result in olfactory chaos. Galbanum brings a fresher, more resinous green quality to the blend. Lavender adds another layer of aromatic complexity, its camphoraceous freshness threading through the composition. The counterweight comes from jasmine's indolic warmth, tonka bean's sweet coumarin, and vetiver's earthy, slightly smoky character. Each element maintains its presence while contributing to a cohesive whole.
The evolution
The opening is all green. Galbanum and absinthe hit first, sharp and slightly medicinal, the kind of aromatic that makes you lean in closer. The wormwood is there too, adding bitter depth to the initial impression. Lavender arrives, softening the edges while maintaining the composition's botanical intensity. As the top notes begin to settle, jasmine emerges, its white floral sweetness blooming against the green backdrop like sunlight breaking through clouds. The bitter notes recede as the creamy floral takes center stage. The absinthe gradually fades, replaced by a warm blend of tonka and vetiver. The tonka adds soft, powdery sweetness while the vetiver grounds everything with its earthy, slightly smoky character. The drydown is intimate, close to the skin, leaving a quiet whisper of warm sweetness and green memory.
Cultural impact
Part of Alkemia's Decadents Collection, this fragrance offers a green, bitter, quietly challenging composition that tells a story. The absinthe note presents a distinctive character that differs from more conventional green fragrances. Some wearers find it beautifully delicate while others experience it as more medicinal. The fragrance occupies a particular corner of indie perfumery, appealing to those who value discovery and unconventional choices in their scent selections.
