The Story
Why it exists.
The beginning
The Cedrè Iris composition grew from an exploration of contrasts: three cedars meeting one iris. The tension between them creates the fragrance's character, cedar's cool, almost metallic clarity against iris's warm, powdery softness. Florentine iris absolute, the most precious one on the market, serves as the heart of the composition. Three cedar types, Virginian, Atlas, Texas, were selected not for redundancy but for the layered depth they create together. Benzoin and myrrh arrive as the quiet anchor, preventing the wood from ever reading as harsh or one-dimensional. The result is a fragrance that doesn't announce itself so much as it reveals itself, slowly, to anyone who gets close enough.
The choice to combine three cedar types isn't accident, it's architecture. Virginian cedar brings the classic pencil-shaving quality, sharp and dry. The other two cedars add complementary dimensions to the blend, preventing the composition from ever sitting flat. Together, they create a cedar that breathes rather than remains static. The Florentine iris absolute, extracted from Iris pallida, the most prized variety, brings the counterbalance: powdery violet, a buttery facet that recalls the root's origin, and a sweetness that emerges only as the cedar begins to recede.
The evolution
The opening announces itself quickly: dry cedar, unmistakable. The kind of sharp, clean wood that arrives in the first breath. But this doesn't stay. Within minutes, the iris begins to emerge, not as a whisper but as a genuine presence. The orris root brings its characteristic buttery quality, softened by the violet-powder sweetness that makes iris so distinctive. By the second hour, the cedar hasn't disappeared. It's simply become the frame rather than the painting. The iris sits in the center now, powdery and warm, held in place by benzoin and myrrh's balsamic depth. The drydown reveals what makes Cedrè Iris unusual: the guaiac wood introduces a smoky character that extends the experience beyond the expected. On skin that holds fragrance well, this lingers for hours, intimate, close, the kind of presence that stays until you wash it off. The iris never fully disappears.
Cultural impact
Cedrè Iris launched in 2015 as part of the Notes de Fond collection. The fragrance balances woody and floral elements, satisfying cedar enthusiasts while earning its iris classification. The composition appeals to those who want something refined without being aggressive, elegant without being loud. Cedar and iris is a classic combination, but the three-cedar structure and the smoky guaiac-incense base give it a specificity that separates it from more straightforward interpretations. Those drawn to this fragrance tend to appreciate the way the materials interact without aggressive projection, preferring presence over performance.
