The Story
Why it exists.
The beginning
Aéropostale took A87, a men's cologne already in the brand's lineup, and turned the dial toward dusk with A87 Eclipse. The name does the work on its own. An eclipse is what happens when light gets blocked, then returns changed, and the fragrance follows that arc, opening with sunlit citrus before sliding into something woodier, more shadowed, more deliberate. This is fashion-rooted perfumery, designed to live alongside a wardrobe rather than a vanity. It sits firmly in the accessible tier, and it leans into that positioning without apology. The vegan formulation, produced through Maesa, keeps things modern without making a fuss about it.
What makes the composition interesting isn't any single note but the sequencing. Elemi resin and mandarin orange share a peppery brightness, which means the opening doesn't fall into the usual citrus cologne trap of going flat after twenty minutes. Instead, the brightness lingers, slowly handing off to the warmer elements waiting beneath. Cistus leaf brings a warm, slightly sticky, almost incense-like quality into the heart, bridging the fresh top with the woodier base. That resinous thread is what keeps the fragrance from reading as a straightforward citrus scent.
The evolution
The first moments belong entirely to lime and mandarin, bright and almost fizzy, with elemi adding a quiet peppery edge underneath. There's nothing shy about the opening. It announces itself with the confidence of something that knows it won't be wearing the same face later. As the citrus recedes, lavender and sage take over, and the brightness doesn't disappear so much as it settles into something cooler and more grounded. The lavender here is clean, not soapy, leaning herbal with a camphor-like coolness. Sage adds a dry, savory green note that keeps things grounded, and there's a quality to the combination that feels almost aromatic in the way a dried herb bundle feels, with that clean, slightly medicinal edge. Cistus leaf works in the background, warming the heart with that faint sticky, resinous quality, the way a wool sweater picks up the smell of woodsmoke at a distance.
Cultural impact
A87 Eclipse occupies a particular place in the fashion-adjacent fragrance space, sitting at a price point that puts it within reach without requiring much deliberation. It doesn't pretend to be anything other than what it is, a clean, easy citrus-woody cologne that does its job without drama. The vegan formulation, produced through Maesa, gives it a modern sensibility without leaning on that as a primary selling point. It's the kind of scent that gets picked up alongside other everyday purchases, slotted into a routine rather than treated as a special occasion purchase.
