The Story
Why it exists.
In 2018, Romy turned to molecular perfumery as a creative direction rather than just a technical category. She'd built 27 87 on the premise that perfume doesn't need to be a memory trigger, it can be a companion to the present. Genetic Bliss was developed using five captive molecules: Akigalawood, Belambre, Moxalone, Javanol, and Georgywood. These were chosen not for novelty, but for their ability to behave differently on different skin types, creating a fragrance that adapts to each wearer. The spicy warmth of Akigalawood mingles with creamy Belambre while the synthetic captives create an intimate, skin-close experience. Every application feels like a conversation between chemistry and individual body chemistry, never quite the same twice.

The Beginning
What makes Genetic Bliss unusual is the choice to lead with captive molecules rather than natural materials. Akigalawood brings a spicy-woody character that leans warm and resinous without the heaviness of traditional oud. Belambre adds a creamy wood facet that softens the structure. Together with the synthetic captives Moxalone, Javanol, and Georgywood, they create a molecular platform that responds to individual skin chemistry.
The Evolution
The opening doesn't open, it arrives. There's no top note phase in the traditional sense because the molecule blend comes in warm, already intimate. Within twenty minutes, the sandalwood emerges and the musk goes skin-close, powdery without being dusty. The synthetic captives keep the woods from drying out; they hold moisture. By hour two, the fragrance has settled into a steady, quiet drydown, still woody, still musky, but now intimate and close. What surprises is the longevity: it performs well over many hours on most skin, and longer on fabric. A spray on a shirt collar will still be detectable for days, warmer and more animalic than it was fresh. The sillage varies based on the wearer's chemistry, this is not a fragrance that precedes you. It waits for someone to get close enough to notice.
Cultural Impact
Genetic Bliss belongs to the Now Line collection, which positions it as a statement about the present rather than a reference to the past. In the broader landscape of molecular perfumery, it sits alongside houses that use synthetic captives not as novelties but as structural tools. Where it distinguishes itself is in the warmth and intimacy: the molecular platform creates a close-wearing scent that adapts differently to each person, turning every wearing into a personalized experience. The fragrance offers something beyond traditional composition, creating a molecular landscape that feels close and personal rather than projecting outward.
The House
Spain · Est. 2016
27 87 is an independent fragrance house based in Barcelona, Spain, founded in 2016 by Romy Kowalewski. The brand takes its name from her birthdate, a personal anchor that grounds its broader creative mission in the present moment. Known for its contemporary, gender-inclusive compositions, the label creates scents designed not as nostalgic anchors or memory triggers, but as companions to lived experience. The collection spans olfactory territories from aromatic to resinous, with notable works including Wandervogel (2016), Genetic Bliss (2018), Sónar (2019), Flâneur (2021), and Per Se (2023). Each fragrance arrives in a signature bottle that reflects the brand's commitment to minimalist, geometric design. Operating without a house perfumer, 27 87 works with external industry collaborators to develop its progressive formulations, maintaining flexibility and creative curiosity across its expanding catalog.

The scent has the quality of something playing in the background of a room you've already settled into, not a statement, a presence. Warm woods and skin-close musk translate into music that feels lived-in rather than performed: intimate production, unhurried tempo, something that doesn't demand attention but rewards it when given.
