Why it exists.
The beginning
Serge de Oliveira created Davana & Vanille Bourbon with one specific memory in mind: the Pasteis de nata of Lisbon. Not just the taste, the feeling. The smell of egg custard drifting from a shop window, the warmth of family walks through the streets of the capital, an odour that brings him back to childhood. That memory became the brief. Warm, gourmand vanilla as a direct translation of those pastries, but with something unexpected underneath to keep it from being just a dessert fragrance.
The davana is that unexpected thing. It carries a herbacious, slightly bitter quality that reads almost medicinal at first, nothing like the sweet custard the name promises. But that's the trick. The perfumer didn't want a straightforward vanilla. The davana's herbal, fruity undertone, softened by warm bourbon vanilla until the two stop fighting and start complementing each other. Rose appears briefly in the heart, a fleeting sweetness before the composition settles into a modern chypre structure built on white cedar and patchouli.
The evolution
The opening announces itself immediately with a fresh lemon scent, the kind of bright citrus that reads like perfect lemonade before it becomes perfume. Beneath that, davana's unusual herbal quality surfaces, a slightly bitter complexity most wearers recognize as something different from the usual fruity opening. As the citrus softens, the composition shifts. The davana deepens into something richer, warmer, the promised pastry sweetness finally arriving. Bourbon vanilla takes over the heart, sweet and edible, while a hint of herbal complexity lingers at the edges. Patchouli begins to assert itself, waxy, earthy, becoming the drydown's dominant note. What lingers is warm and skin-close: vanilla warmth softened by woody patchouli, intimate rather than projected, the kind of scent that announces itself only when someone leans in close.
