Opus XIV – Royal Tobacco.

Opus XIV is the fourteenth entry in Amouage's Library Collection. Royal Tobacco is the brief: a journey from Oman to Cuba, royal frankincense to regal tobacco. Cecile Zarokian composed the fragrance by bringing together these two iconic materials, each with deep traditions, and letting them speak while finding their own balance. The result is a fragrance that moves between continents, finding common ground in warmth and depth.

Frankincense carries weight in this composition, a material with centuries of meaning and presence in perfumery. Cuban tobacco brings its own character, the leaf with a sweetness that develops as it matures. Both arrive with credentials. The question was whether they could coexist. Cecile Zarokian answered this with an accord structure that builds the aromatic and balsamic elements in layers, the tobacco blooming inside the frankincense, not against it. The tobacco breathes within the frankincense, and the frankincense holds its ground while accommodating the warmth and sweetness of the leaf.

The frankincense opens. It carries the first portion of the wear, its resinous presence establishing the composition's direction. Star anise and elemi arrive quietly underneath, lending sweetness. Basil and cardamom hold the herbs at the front, keeping the whole thing from becoming too thick too soon. Bergamot is present, a moment of cool before the warmth takes over. The overall effect is aromatic. The heart develops over time. Tobacco steps forward, richer than expected, softened by fenugreek and tonka bean. Licorice threads through, not as a dominant note but as a modifier, adding depth without making the composition feel like a confection. Osmanthus contributes warmth. Neroli and orange blossom arrive as clean, cool counterparts to all that sweetness. Rose sits in the background, barely visible. The heart is warm and enveloping without being heavy.

Royal Tobacco has built a loyal following since its 2022 debut. The frankincense-tobacco accord has become its signature, a pairing that distinguishes it from more straightforward tobacco fragrances. Among niche houses, the composition occupies a specific register. Wearers appreciate the way it balances boldness with restraint, the warmth of the tobacco and the depth of the frankincense creating something that feels considered rather than obvious. The fragrance has found its audience among those who seek out niche perfumery for compositions that reward attention.
